Which is a better school overall? Which is a better school for Computer Science?
Temple-Prefer the city environment, has big campus
Hofstra-Prefer the class structure, has medium campus feel
Both have similar class sizes, graduation rates, rank, diversity,& will probably have the same net price(Out-of-State for both). I could see myself going to either. I like both campuses and how they feel. If they are not too expensive, I will go to either one.
P.S. Other Schools I applied to
Drexel-Top Choice & still waiting, but will most likely be too expensive
Wentworth IT-Great location & school but did not like the demographic makeup
Montclair-Safety
William Paterson-Safety
NJIT-Waitlisted, may go(was a high choice)
Rutgers NB-Rejected
Not Considering,but got accepted to
Univ. New Haven-Hated the engineering school, everything else was okay, doesn’t seem great for the money
Quinnipiac-Too expensive/not enough scholarship money
NYIT Manhattan-Doesn’t seem good, not worth the money
True. At the accepted students day at Hofstra they said it was 50/50 dorm/commute, however their housing is guaranteed where as at Temple it isn’t guaranteed.
Hofstra gave me a $14,000 scholarship, including financial aid, it’ll be around $35,000 total. Temple will probably be around the same since I’m out of state.
Thanks. Yes I applied in January. I should get a decision by this week or next week. I knew that if I put my test scores it would’ve been a little harder to get in and I wouldn’t recieve any scholarships.
I have nothing against Hofstra, I was accepted there in fact. It’s just way too expensive (only gave me a $12.5k per year scholarship with no other aid) and I heard the people there are really stuck up and unintelligent. Just wasn’t for me at all.
My son is a sophomore at Temple and yesterday we visited Hofstra for admitted students day, because my daughter is considering going there as a freshman next year. We have more experience with Temple, but I have a good sense of both schools. Temple seems more vibrant and more integrated into the community around it. Hofstra touts being 45 minutes from NYC, which is a great opportunity. I don’t know how convenient it is though, since you need to take a shuttle bus then a train. If you want to be in the city (and are made of money) go to NYU. Temple is only 10 minutes from downtown Philly, using the subway line right on campus. Going downtown for business & social events has been a big part of my son’s college experience. Hofstra is a quieter, prettier campus. If you’re comfortable with the urban setting, Temple is a great place. If that doesn’t appeal, go Hofstra. Your major/program should be a big deciding factor too.
A word from the wise: Hempstead, NY isn’t safe or pretty. At all. That was also a massive deterrent for me and why it ended up as only my fourth choice with no medal. If you truly want to be safe as a Hofstra student, just stay on campus all the time. If you want fun, head to NYC, although that’s more than costly to do every weekend.
If you head East from Hofstra, there are no problems there. You’ll go past the Nassau Coliseum into East Meadow. If you go North you will be in Garden City, a very nice area. I don’t think the area should be a deterrent to go there. My daughter went there and my son was accepted there as well and given a $28K scholarship. It’s a good school.
Please don’t make your college decision by a sample size of one in an anonymous internet site. Do your research, leverage social media to connect with current students and recent graduates. If you can afford to, an in person visit is very valuable. Both areas are a little rough but near nice areas. See where you feel at home.
Our GC told us that Hofstra has ambitions to be an up and coming university. It has a dynamic new president who is trying to raise its stature and to increase its professional offerings at the graduate level. It has an honors program and is offering considerable merit scholarships to attract good students. I think it has a ways to go. However, consider that 20 years ago, USC and Northeastern were more like safety schools for well-off families. Look at them now.
