Yes, there were a handful of free shuttles to the airport. Unfortunately, there was not one early enough to catch the flight I took home. It's a nice service, but $15 lets you leave when you want in a regular airport van.

I took the $15 airport van that assigns a pick-up time when you make a reservation online. Just tell them what time you want to leave, and they usually can schedule a van within 30 minutes or so of that time. The van may also make other pickups around USC before heading to the airport.

You must make pick-up reservations online the day before. You can't just flag down a van for a ride, as all the seats may be reserved during peak times.

However, at LAX you do not need a reservation and the vans are filled first-come, first-served. I've had bad experiences on that end though, including having to wait an hour at the curb for a downtown-bound van.

The two airport van companies are PrimeTime Shuttles and SuperShuttles. They are basically the same.

Cabs are a faster, but more expensive route. I believe it was just under $40 to get from LAX to USC on move-in day. However, they are a good option if you have a lot of luggage, as the shared vans are often stuffed beyond capacity.

Another option, if your flight is at a "decent time" is to catch public transportation--it's about $3.25 I've been told. So far, we rented a car & drove my S from the airport, but when he's coming home for winter break, his flight leaves LAX about 5pm, so we'll see what he & his buddies on the same flight choose to do.
I have read that the shuttle will pick them up at the dorm & drop them at the airport & then reverse the process if they make appropriate reservations, all for $15-20. Doesn't matter to me which way he chooses to get where he needs to be.
