I'm surprised that no one thus far has said anything about College of the Holy Cross... I'm applying to it as a well-respected safety. Sure the Worcester area isn't so fabulous but I liked a lot about the school and its campus when I took a tour there, and know some people who thoroughly enjoy attending the school. I hope someone else out there is applying as well!

Me,me, I'm applying RD. I haven't seen the campus yet, I plan to this winter. Is it pretty, I hear it's in a crappy, boring section of town. Is that true, do you think it's a well considered school? Not many from my school apply or attend.

The campus itself is very pretty; they make a point to tell you it is a registered arboretum. It is quite hilly and there are stairs pretty much everywhere, which is neither good nor bad, just something I noticed. The architecture was moderately nice, if I remember correctly. The dorms are at least slightly bigger than several schools I have seen, and the new senior housing is gorgeous.

I don't know specifics about its academic reputation, but from my (Catholic) high school I know several motivated students who are applying and actually considering attending. I would guess 2 or 3 seniors attend each year.

hc is your safety haha what are you stats?

Is anyone else applying to Holy Cross RD? I am.

Yes; am also from CT...what school are you at? I'm looking for an NROTC scholie since it pays full tuition and HC picks up the R&B. Good deal if I can get it.
1400/VP of Class/Nat. Hon Society/Scholar-Athlete/4 yrs. track and football/club pres/peer minister/Eagle Scout/top 25% in very comp. school. Wish me luck!

hey those of you that applied rd to holy cross, what are your stats?

currently attending Holy Cross

I know for a fact that HC has one of the most well-respected Classics Departments in the nation. It is extremely strong in Philosophy, PoliSci, and English as well. To tell you the truth, I don't think there is a "weak" department here. I can also tell you that HC is very, very good at getting kids into their top-choice grad schools.

HC has a very nice campus; it keeps up appearances. I've heard it's won some awards for it. In any case, the new buildings are lovely inside and out, but the older ones are truly skeezy. The Chapel is gorgeous, as is Smith. Swords & O'Neil (they're connected) are sort of strange, there's a botanical garden in between them ...Swords can also boast of stairs modeled after DNA strands. Speaking of stairs - yes, there are MANY MANY stairs all around campus, as it's quite hilly...but that simply means we have powerful butts up on the Hill! It's a relatively small campus, which means it's not too difficult to become familiar with.

Classes are really, really small; I haven't taken one with more than 25 kids as of yet. We get a great amount of attention from professors.

I would also recommend FYP!

I won't lie to you, it's not for everyone. I happen to be attempting to transfer this year, so just make sure you visit as many times as you can, sit in on classes, spend the night (if possible)...etc...yeah.

why are you transfering?

I find the social & extracurricular scenes extremely unfulfilling, despite a LOT of effort on my part.

I've been in/around Worcester for 18 years, -I'm so sick of it that I could scream, but that's not my main motivation for transferring- it's far from an exceptional place, and there is really very little to do off-campus. What's available on-campus, aside from academics (classes and lectures are amazing), is far from satisfactory in my book. Then again, everybody is different, and most of my friends here adore the school. I just don't find that there is a lot of intellectual discussion going on here outside of academic settings. A glaring separation between work and play is endorsed here by the students.

So, you'll be all set if you enjoy getting hammered 3-4/7 nights a week. For some people that is more than enough for contentment.

there aren't any interesting clubs to join? i was thinking of joining a volunteer club in college and also doing club sports, which in my mind would keep me fairly busy

sure there are. I didn't say there weren't. it all depends on what you find interesting, I suppose. It is not as though there are no clubs. I do community service and a club sport (water polo), for instance. and radio, and newspaper. and I'm trying to start an organization of my own. The general stuff is available. the college experience should entail a bit more than ecs and classes and keeping yourself busy...that's how I feel, at least.

I wonder if this is true at almost all schools.

flipflopgroove, what schools are you looking at transfer to? are you able to determine whether they will be more serious academically as you are seeking?

T990: It probably is and I'm just idealistic.

I was considering Wesleyan, Brown, Yale, and some others just by virtue of the fact that they are larger and supposedly rather intellectually diverse. I suppose there is no way real way to determine if any one of these schools will "fit" - I just will have to visit frequently and put a lot of thought into this...in any case, I have another year to search if I remain dissatisfied. It should be noted that HC was not my first choice, nor even one of my top five - I was WL'ed just about everywhere else - and yes, I should have put a lot more thought into where I applied my senior year.

And it's not simply "intellectual discussion," it's more like an overall lack of intellectual vibrancy. Again, this may be happening everywhere. I have no way of knowing. I just have to hope that it isn't the case...or simply deal with it, I suppose!

I don't want to discourage people from applying to or even attending HC. Just because it's not a fit for ME personally doesn't mean it's not a great school. With that said, VERY few students actually transfer from HC, and most of my friends love it here.

Anyway, I think I'm done discussing my situation.

flipflopgroove, the problem with this whole process is that you can't really know all you need to know until you get into it and even then, few people experience more than 1 school to be able to compare anyway. Who has the time to do a stay over and attend some classes at every school they're interested in; and then you might get rejected anyway. Thats why I'm here on CC, trying to get an idea of what each school might be like. From what I've read, maybe U of Chicago is what you're looking for, or perhaps Haverford. studentsreview.com is a useful source.

t990 did u apply to holy cross

crazy242: yes, but I don't have a #1 or even a rank order. A lot will depend on cost & scholarships.

I was under the impression that HC was the best academically of the New England catholic schools.

Something that surprised me as I visited schools is how many colleges have nothing to do off campus within walking distance. Even though HC is in a large city, it didn't seem like you could walk to anything from campus except maybe a Wendy's. The campus seems really nice, but it's a world onto its own I guess.

most of the colleges i applied to have really crappy towns but ive always wanted to just stay put on whatever college campus i end up on. even if theres nothing to do in walking distance, i think meeting new people and doing sports will keep me pretty busy

hye guys its nice to see that there are people on this board again
anyway i applied to holy cross
stats - 1450 Sat 750/740/670 sat IIs 4.2 W top 10 % at a Catholic high school which they like and accept a bunch of people from each year

Good Luck to everyone !! Only a month and a half until we get our decisions.

What school rachie? High school that is?
