Holy Cross vs Providence College

D got accepted at both schools and plans on majoring in Biology or Psychology. She loves both schools. The schools will cost about the same. She did accepted in Liberal Arts Honors Program at Providence College. Both our good schools. What school do you think is better?

Not even close. Holy Cross is far more selective and highly regarded than Providence College.

Even with her getting into Honors Program at Providence College you will still select HC?

I know there is no comparison between BC and Stonehill. Stonehill is a safety school to BC. Is this comparsion the same between HC and PC?

No one would select Providence over Holy Cross unless they could not afford Holy Cross.

The game has change little because their is cost difference. I thought we will get more money from Holy Cross. HC does not have Merit Scholarship and we did not get much from need-based scholarlarship/grants from HC.I thought they receive a lot money from their alumni.

We heard back from some schools and some of FA has changed.I made mistake on Wheaton cost.

  1. Holy Cross, MA: $57K - ($8,000) (Grant)= $49,000
  2. Providence College, RI: (Accepted to Honors Program): $57.5K - $18,000 (Merit) + $7,000 (Grant)= $32,500
  3. Connectect College: $59k - $10,000 (Grant): $49,000
  4. Stonehill College, MA: $52K - $20,000 (Merit)= $32,000
  5. Wheaton College, MA: $59.5K - $20,000 (Merit) + $9,000 (Grant) = $30,500
** Grants are not guarantee every year because our income can change.

HC is the best school out the 5 schools above.HC is also my D # 1 school to attend. Connecticut college supposed to be good school too what we have research and heard from other people. CC has nice campus too. However, my D did like Providence College too. The difference to attend HC or CC instead of Providence College is about $17,000 year and $68,000 total. That is alot money. I would have to borrow the difference. It might take me several years to pay it off. Do you all think it’s worth it even if HC is better school and more prestige then PC?

She wants to go into to Pre-med but you know kids can change their mind. I know she wants to do something in medical such as doctor or PA, etc. Right now she wants to go to medical school. I heard HC Pre-Med program can be brutal. Is it very cut-throat? Is it true faculty will refuse to write committee letters for students whom they feel may not get an admission, so if you’re not among the top premeds at HC then you can’t apply to med school. If you pay all that money to the school and the faculty will not support you then I think that would horrible.

You are correct about the pre-med program at HC. You have to be accepted into the pre-med program or they will not support your application, even if you have a great GPA. That’s how they keep their acceptance rate to medical school high. NO school is worth crazy debt.

How does HC accept you in the pre-med program? Is this done after Freshman year or before? They told us that you cannot pick majors until after you Freahman year. I know pre-med is not major but when do they pick people?

The game has changed now. Connecticult College and Providence College came back with more money.

What is better school… Providence College or Connecticut College? Is their much difference school academics. I I know both these schools have different school and student culture. Both Schools have a different vibe. Connecticut College seems like the student base is artsy. D is not arsty but she did like the school and campus. Providence College has Div 1 sports and city of Providence is nice. Schools not in the best area of Providence but campus is safe and city is cool. 1900 students vs 4500 students. Both are small schools and small classes though which good for my D.I guess both schools have pros and cons.

Providence College, RI: (Accepted to Honors Program): $57.5K - $18,000 (Merit) - $8,000 (Grant) = $31,500 Connecticut College: $60.8 - $26,383 (Grant) = $34,417

D got into Honors Program at PC.

Cost of both schools are very close. So both schools are in our range as that we can afford with the scholarships she received.

PC Merit Scholarship ($18,000/year & $72,000/Total) is guaranteed for four years. The Grant Scholarships are based on need-based (whatever that means) and they are not guarantee every year. Our income can swing different directions every year.

HC cost is way to high. I think it’s going to come down to these both schools now. Tough choices.

Connecticut College is generally ranked higher than Providence College so I would tend to favor it all else being equal.

Connecticut College is full of Prep school kids who are still bent about not getting into a better NESCAC school. Providence is full of mostly pleasant B+ Catholic school kids from nice suburbs around the Northeast. Premed comes down to great grades and good to great MCAT scores; Med Schools are full of students from mid-level state colleges and low rank LAC’s.

The Dominican Friars aren’t quite the scholars the Jesuits are, nor are they the fun-lovers the Franciscans are, but they still put forth an engaged and caring undergraduate education. It sounds like they want your daughter, and that’s as good of a sign as you get in the college game.
