Homecoming King

Hi all I'm new to this board but I just happened to have a question that came up yesterday. I applied to Harvard RD and just turned in my app, but I didn't put anywhere that I was chosen as Homecoming King for my school last fall. I assumed this was not the kind of award Harvard would care about, but several people have said I should have put the award. While it is mostly a popularity contest, it does show I have the respect of my peers. Plus, at our school the Homecoming King/Queen are approved by a "council" of teachers and administrators to make sure he/she is a respectable student. Should I notify Harvard of this award or would that just be stupid?

Your peers are right. You should have included the award. It would be fine to mention it in an update letter.

so that would not be seen as a just a popularity contest? How helpful do you think it would be to my application?

by the way thanks!

My two cents:

It shows that you have the respect of your peers. That is enough. Your peers obviously think that you are a good guy and the most worthy of the title. Why shouldn't Harvard know? It says a lot that you are so highly thought of by your peers, especially if you attend a large high school.

My school doesn't have those things, so excuse me if I am mistaken.

yeah its a good thing. it shows that out of all the kids in your class, you were picked. you must have something good about you. plus it adds a layer to your application. (i mean back in the day they were looking hard for val, 1600, varsity athletes that were homecoming king. they want the big man on campus at their school)

I always thought Harvard likes popular people, no?

Harvard definitely likes social people. Homecoming King can make a case as the highest social honor you can get as far as popularity goes. For some reason, I'm thinking that Homecoming King would probably get you more points than say a National Merit Finalist title. Is that a little weird for me to think that way?

Weird but very possible. Harvard gets plenty of genius applicants (Merit Finalists, etc.) and wants to make sure they aren't all nerds who will hole themselves up in their rooms all day ;)

Being popular would be perceived as a plus. Presumably, if one is applying to Harvard and one also is popular, one also would have a lot of brains. In adcom's eyes, you might be seen as having potential to follow in the footsteps of alums like the Roosevelts and John Kennedy.

I put it on my application! I was king junior year

i was homecoming court 10th grade and i put it on my app and i got in

are you serious? I was homecoming king and I mentioned it in my additional info on the common app. Should I re-mention it in an update (probably gonna send amc scores if possible) ? I focused heavily on my academic/extracurricular side but my Harvard essay was more of a philosophical essay about “the little things.” supped with my robotics club/internship common app essay about tenacity.

Send an update! Like everyone before me said, it adds another dimension to your application–you aren’t just brains, but you also have a personality! Having the respect of one’s peers and teachers is a high honor–put it and explain the context in which you were selected.

Congrats and good luck!

Bros, this post is 6 years old. This guy has already graduated from college.
