I know that there have been quite a few threads on putting homecoming kings in the honors/awards section on applications, but I was wondering if it would be appropriate (or not necessarily appropriate but acceptable) to put it in the activities sections since there's a lot more room there (and I can't fill it up).

not really- its not something colleges care about. Its fluff- you didn’t do anything, other than being popular.

You know, I would list it. Being popular isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It means your classmates thought highly enough of you to vote for you, for whatever reason. It shows a certain level of interpersonal skill.

Nothing wrong with being popular, but that is a trait that is more likely to come out in your recommendations or other activities. I think if you can provide a clever way of incorporating it into your additional information section, then perhaps include it - but it is definitely not a relevant honor or award, and is likely to either highlight the fact that you are light on that, or overshadow more meaningful accomplishments.

What if you’re application shows you off as more of an intellectual (i.e. really math/science-y) and you’re not exactly that kind of popular? Would it add a nice dimension to the application then?

I would put it. It would demonstrate that you are well liked by other people. In any case, I don’t think the ad coms would penalize you for it.

I don’t think it’s a bad thing, but I would prioritize it well below things such as ‘President of Club X’ or ‘Football/Cheer Captain’ that actually have real responsibilities and achievements attached rather than just winning a title that might not mean anything. The thing about Homecoming King is that it is not really a role, it is more like a superlative on a yearbook at least in my experience. I would not avoid listing it though but it wouldn’t be the best thing that you could put there.
