Homeschool College Class of 2021 Applications/Acceptances

Hey all!

I’ve read this forum here and there and finally decided to join; I thought this would be a fun discussion to start. I’m a homeschooled incoming senior looking to start applying to schools in August. Right now, based on scholarships and academics, I’m looking at these schools -

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Texas A&M University
University of Texas at Dallas
University of Oklahoma

Anybody else?

Currently looking at:

Northeastern University
University of Maryland - College Park
New York University
Boston University

I obviously have some safeties lined up but these are my ideal schools! In terms of admissions I have things pretty set. I’m going to try to bring my ACT up another point or two in these next couple of months, and I need to do really well on subject tests in October if I want to apply to NEU for early decision. (Absolutely bombed them during the summer T_T)

Hi guys!

ACT: 32
SAT: 2030

Subject tests:
bio: 690
lit: 700
math 2: 650 (yikes!!!)

I am looking at:

Washington University in St. Louis (ED)
Brown
University of Chicago
Duke

I have been homeschooling for a year and a half now. It is safe to say I am absolutely terrified of this upcoming process considering I am a homeschooler and my stats aren’t the best. Anyways, it is my dream to go to a school of this level, so I am trying my best!

one ds finished at Colgate. a dd currently at UToronto St.George. Both homeschooled.

@biniballerini If it makes you feel any better about your Math 2, I somehow got an even 600 :’)

Hi guys,

so I got my first rejection at Rice University (honesty heartbroken) I am currently an exchange student and thought that make up for my not so amazing scores but it didn’t and I wont be attending my dream school. Guess it isn’t where I am supposed to be. I have applied ED II to Colgate (I know my list has changed a lot but I have just kind of lowered my ridiculously high standards because I know I am not the perfect homeschooled applicant. I am no prodigy just a girl who loves to learn and experience(guess that isn’t good enough) but yeah Ill update you later on Colgate. I am really hoping to be accepted. My list has stayed the same but I am doubtful about Brown, Duke, Dartmouth, Stanford(lol), and WashU. Also I applied to University of North Texas for a safety.

Hi! I applied to:
University of San Diego - won’t hear until 2/13 at the earliest
San Diego State - waiting to hear, I know some decisions have gone out already
Cal State San Marcos (safety) - accepted

I was also originally considering:
Pepperdine
Chapman
UCSD
Cal Poly Pomona

I toured all of these and decided it wasn’t worth applying if I didn’t like the campus feel/the people I interacted with.

Stats: 4.11 GPA, 29 ACT, dual credit college courses in junior and senior years of HS, and took a gap year

My son got accepted by University of Memphis and got Presidential scholarship even though he didn’t apply to the school. Lol. He got accepted by Texas A&M College Station the only school he applied to…where he will be part of the Corps of Cadets.

Stats: 3.96 uw GPA. 33 ACT. 5 dual credit courses. Governors School of International Studies. NSHSS, Torch and Laurel. Fencing for 5 years.

I applied to about 20 schools, with my top 3 being Vassar, Brown, and Hamilton. So far, I’ve been accepted to all of my safeties: Albright College, Allegheny College, Mills, Iona, Notre Dame of Maryland University, Arcadia University, & Sweet Briar.
I’ve been homeschooled all my life

Hi everyone! I have been homeschooled my entire life, and will graduate with 20 + dual credit hours from a local community college.

I was accepted to Baylor University, Liberty University, Texas Tech, DBU. (I only applied to Baylor but was auto admitted to the others by sending them my ACT scores) I qualified for Baylor’s Distinguished Scholar Pre-med and am so excited!

Being homeschooled was a huge blessing and made me so much more independent. Some tips for other homeschoolers applying to college:
-Have some dual credits under your belt. This proves you can keep up with the work and helps your transcript be more credible.
-Study study study for the ACT! I had a 31 composite which wasn’t the greatest, the higher it is the more scholarships Baylor offers. I’m sure other schools do this too.

  • Don’t let anyone look down on you for being homeschooled! Prove them wrong.Know we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.
  • If you’re doing the whole application process yourself, tell the school! Once they found out it was me applying and not some counselor, they were much friendlier and sent me all the forms I needed quickly.
  • Have a lot of extra curriculars! I had over 15, which really helped.

Best of luck, and congrats to everyone who’s been accepted.

@biniballerini Any update? Hope you are getting some good news!

Would love to hear from others, too!

I was homeschooled for the first 2 years of HS (not for religious reasons), and went on to full-time community college after.

Stats - 4.11 weighted GPA, 29 ACT composite (36 reading, 35 English, 29 science, 17 math), long-term/meaningful ECs, worked full-time, took a gap year and went to France. Strong essays, outstanding letters of rec.

Accepted: University of San Diego (first choice, attending), UW Seattle, Cal State San Marcos
Waitlisted: none!
Denied: SDSU

Hey there,

Coming in a bit late, but I’m homeschooled with 19 credits from my local community college. I applied to 8 schools and have received acceptance to all. Currently, I am deciding between Syracuse University, Point Loma University, or American University. UNC-Chapel Hill is my top school right now, but still waiting for them to release decisions.

I have a 1220 SAT
3.95 GPA and 4.0 GPA for college classes

just want to share some successes-and advice

I totally agree - Dual Enrollment all the way!! My DS will have 17 credit hours a the end of this year. Find a passion and follow it. And make sure those SAT/ACT scores make sense with the grades on your transcript! This is the credibility you need to “prove” you are ready.
GPA 3.8 (including Community College Classes)
SAT 1500

My Homeschooled all the way son was accepted at all of the schools he applied to- 4 for 4 University Vermont, The College of the Holy Cross, WPI and UMASS

We also spent lots of time on the school report and the “Course Catalog” to show what was learned in each class.

Love all the great news!!

What did you all do for recommendations - comm college professors or ??

@onawingandprayer What were your extracurriculars?

@biniballerini - Any updates? Hope you got into some great schools!

My Dd took a very different approach. She absolutely embraced the freedom of homeschooling to study subjects she wanted to study and pursued them at great depth. She didn’t attempt to replicate competitive ps students. She focused on her passionate interests, and we created research focused courses around those interests. She has 1 DE course this semester, stats. It is the only outside course she took other than foreign lang with private tutors. Everything else she did at home.

She was accepted everywhere she applied (10 total) and received scholarships from every school. The schools range from URochester (Dean’s scholarship) to Fordham (with full tuition) to UOk (NM and global engagement fellowship).

She did have competitive test scores and was a NMF. But in addition to her test scores, her admissions results were due to her high levels of achievement as a self-motivated student studying at home. Her application and transcript were uniquely hers and celebrated her love of learning.

(FWIW, she is my 5th homeschool grad. )

ETA: FWIW, I should emphasize that our homeschool does not resemble the vast majority of homeschoolers on this website. I am their teacher. I am directly involved in what my kids do on a daily basis. I also have extremely high academic standards. Most of what is described on this homeschool forum is not what I consider homeschooling at all.

@Mom2aphysicsgeek Congrats on all the acceptances!
How did you deal with recommendations for college? (Dual enrollment teachers?)

I’ve read many of your posts and been planning to DM you, I’ll do that soon!

@sunnyschool No DE teachers. The only DE class she has taken is this semester. She used her 2 foreign language tutors as recommenders.
