homesick

I just moved in yesterday, and wow...I'm already homesick. Parents are off 10 hours away. Does this happen to a lot of people? I'm kinda down. =(

yeah, i remember those feelings - it's natural and will always hit some people more than others. (it happened to be again last year when i moved across the country, only this time it was leaving my friends - not family - behind.) my advice to you, hard as it may be to take, is to NOT spend time in your room on AIM with memories of home all around you. go to the gym, grab random classmates for lunch or something, meet up with your high school friends to explore the campus/UTC/beach area, etc. people are super-friendly during the first few weeks and that dies off fast as people start drifting into their groups and cliques -- take advantage of this while you can.

hang in there, i know what you're going through :)

yea i just moved in friday and wat astrina says is very true..just try to grab some of your suitemates or possibly ur roomate(s) to go out eat or just walk around campus..but i know how u feel...im very far away from home too..Sacramento! LOL but i hope everything gets better soon. :)

im having something similar to what astrina described. im from san diego but i miss my friends, and mostly everyone ive met so far at UCSD seems like they are in college to do drugs and drink their faces off every night. That doesnt bother me but at the same time it doesnt really appeal to me as a source of fun or entertainment. they still have great personalities and are fun to talk to

im down to have a beer casually and chat but im not into like drinking to get ****ED UP and drunk out of my mind or smoking marijuana or doing hard drugs. there are still alot of people to meet out there but my experiences so far have been: fun = lets do drugs

=/

the drugs and drinking are, for the most part, short-lived. i think a lot of people come to college with the hopes of showing off and looking cool ... which frequently leads to them doing things way out of their league. there will always be the alcoholics and the stoners, but after a while most people will stray away from that scene. by the time junior and senior year (ie, legal age-ness) rolled around, fun nights were a lot simpler -- dinner, movies, and dumb spontaneity like scaling fences to go hot-tubbing in the grad housing complex next door. maybe a few beers involved, but nothing like what you're seeing now.

@shinydrag -- whereabouts in sactown are you from? (i'm from the pocket/greenhaven area, but went to school by CSUS)

Arctic, what college are you in?
I had Warren orientation over the weekend and I found most of the people to be pretty sociable, and well-balanced (no pun intended) when it came to academics/social life.

For those iffy perhaps because of some threads on here, I just have to say that the class of 2012 seems to dispel all those "socially dead" rumors/notions. Again, it may have just been the people I talked to but all seems well as of now.

Stan, im in Warren also. I was in orientation group 4. I find all the people sociable, I'm a pretty outgoing person. Of course there are the more awkward ones and more talkative ones. I just found that the most sociable ones that I bonded with were also the ones into drugs and the sort, there is nothing wrong with that but at 8pm i'd rather go out to the city instead of smoke weed

@astrina:

i live around the meadowview area by mack rd., wow!..greenhaven/pocket area? i practiced my driving skills in that area!..nice community and wide streets LOL its great to hear that a fellow sacramento resident that lives close to where i live has achieve many successes in their life :)

haha, it's only been 10 hours and you're already homesick?

Did you not have sleep overs at a friends houses when you were a kid? Just think of it like that, except your friends an alcoholic, and his parents are drug addicts. Also, they're like 50% asian.

I think OP meant that his home is 10 hours away, not that he's only been here for 10 hours haha.

Go outside of your suite and talk to other students...maybe their idea of fun is the same as yours. Not everyone is a pothead/druggie. Find some student orgs. They've probably already started recruiting and if you want to find others, they're on Library Walk alllllll the time...

Also, since it's the first couple days here, and school hasn't started yet, everyone just wants to 'celebrate' the special moment...I really think at least half of drinking/drugs will go away when school really starts to get going. I mean, most people don't show up to school drunk, except on Sungod ;)

hey coolguy, i agree with what others have said about getting out and meeting new people and exploring the campus and nearby areas -- so many great things to do. your college will have great activities to get involved in -- for example, revelle has a surfing lesson planned. but when you really need to just talk to your mom or your brother/sister, just go in your room and get on skype. You can have a video chat with your mom/sister/whoever you are missing most at the moment and it's free! 10 hours won't seem so far away when you can hear their voices and see their faces on your webcam. And you will have so many exciting things to talk about you will soon stop feeling so homesick!

Yeah, for the past few days I have been really homesick, but it got a lot better yesterday. I just tried to keep myself busy by going off-campus and exploring La Jolla and San Diego with a friend.

Reading what most of you have said actually makes me feel better. I've been trying to go out lately. I think I'm set now. And my parents are 10 hours away. I didn't get homesick after 10 hours, that'd be kinda funny. Thanks all!

im living off campus and i am SO homesick, when i am at my apartment or when im at school i feel like crying constantly..

aw.
just think of it this way..
everyone feels homesick whether they show it or not. yep, i mean everyone.
yeah i agree, going out helps to keep your mind off home..
hope you start feeling better.

Haha, I'm not as homesick anymore, but I just got sick. Ugh.

Living off campus as well sarah.

First couple of day were a bit rough, but that was mostly due to not being familiar with the city and not having any source of entertainment.

Since then, things have been a whole heck of a lot better. I'm actually just really enthused about the start of the fall quarter, and am looking to blaze through the competition.

I'm incredibly homesick too! I just hope schoolwork gets me distracted.

just like sarah i'm living off campus this year as well-i'm a 3rd year. i'm still trying to get used to the general area and having to cook and manage my room by my own, and moving into an apartment with 2 dudes that i never knew (but they've already lived together before). so far it's been really boring because i've been in my room all day, so i'm actually looking forward for classes to start and i feel more motivated to try to make a better effort knowing people. i'm a little bit homesick but i think it's normal for everyone to feel that way. i kinda feel a little lost because i'm not used to the area but i think i'll get used to it quickly.

anchor and infamy, yeah i am in my first year and i am living off campus with some people i kind of know, some of them are strangers. it is nice to be in an apartment but i dont know the area and i am having to take a bus to class which is pretty confusing. also, not having internet does not help the feeling of isolation!
