I’ve signed up for these three classes next year and I’m wondering if those who’ve taken either APUSH, AP Bio, or AP Lang could tell me the average amount of time it took to do that course’s homework. I know that they’re all reading heavy classes, so I’d like to map out a HW schedule to manage the work load.
I took all three as a junior last year.
Average number of hours spent on homework and assignments (not including studying) for each class PER WEEK:
AP US History: 0
AP English Language: 8
AP Biology: 5
For APUSH we had 2-3 hours of homework per month from September to March. After that, we never had homework ever again. No outlines, no mandatory textbook readings. That is definitely not the norm though. My English teacher, on the other hand, believed English was the only class we had and we had to write about 20 pages of homework per week, on top of essays and other formsl assignments.
It depends on the teacher. At my s’s school apush averages 1-2 hours of homework a night. AP bio is a lot of reading each night, and AP Lang depended on which teacher you got.
Your best option is to find students who took these classes at your HS last year and get a feel for the workload and how the classes are taught by your AP teachers. There really is no “rule of thumb” on the workload.
APUSH: spent 3 hours on the weekends outlining (one chapter) and two hours before tests studying.
Haven’t taken the rest yet though!!
Like @goldensrock said, it varies, but this is my experience:
-For APUSH, I spent 20-30 minutes on homework each night, then studied 7-8 hours the weekend before major exams. Whoops. (If you’re a junior, you won’t have time to keep up with textbook readings unless you REALLY plan it out.)
-For AP Lang, my teacher didn’t really assign homework besides readings from books and occasional essays; I’d just finish reading the chapters on the bus, so I almost never had homework. Essays took me 2 hours to write on average, though.
Yeah I found this in my class too; lots of people couldn’t keep up with the readings. I had to really plan it out

Our old AP Lang teacher left, so I guess I’ll just have to plan for that when school starts. I’ll have to find some seniors to ask about homework…
