How do you stay motivated to do your homework?

I'm doing beautifully in most of my classes, but I have trouble wanting to do my Econ homework because it's all assignments out of the book and I don't see the value in it.

My other classes are fine-like for Philosophy I have to research Hume, no problem. For Bible as Literature I have to read, fine. I just don't see value in answering questions that are given to you from the bolded text...I also don't feel that it's really preparing me for college. sigh

Funny because for my AP Econ class, we hardly get any book work. All we do is do vocab cards and then pretty much base all the lectures off those. I like it.

I hate classes that are strictly busy work. It's the biggest waste of time. Why should we be answering questions when the answers are literally half a page above the questions? How does that help us?

It is sometimes hard to focus on the homework aspect--my teachers rarely collect it, but they catch us by giving us once-every-two-weeks-or-maybe-two-days checks (in some classes) so we kind of have to.

I really couldn't say because I just put down crap for my homework. In my Math class, the teacher only grades for completion, and he says you only hurt yourself if you don't do it right, but he gives us review sheets for every test, so I'll slip some fake work on some problems.

In the immortal words of my AP Euro/AP Macro/AP Gov teacher, Mr. Halback, "Homework is retarded."

I try to do homework so as to not hurt my grade, but its hard to stay motivated even if I do see the value in what we are doing. I mean, I can understand the value behind the AP Calc homework, for instance, or the AP Physics homework (problems to practice our skills), but I did miss some AP Calc assignments because they were kind of excessive. On the other hand, the homework for AP Human Geo and French is stupid, the former involving us cutting out articles from a newspaper and doing a who/what/where/when/how summary on it, or making vocabulary lists, and the latter usually being some stupid thing on verb completion or conjugation (then again, the entire class is about that, and memorization, which I dislike).

Anyways, HisGraceFillsMe, I understand how you feel. If I may offer some advice, maybe you want to become grade conscious? If it's only your economy class, try to get an idea of how much of a grade you can earn by tests and such, and then just do enough homework to get an A with that, however low of an A it may be. This is a risky maneuver, but I think its better than you becoming unmotivated completely and abandoning all econ homework.

I just did my Econ Homework ^_^ It actually wasn't too bad, and it kinda motivated me to do it more often.

That's really good advice though...the thing is with my class, if we're absent we can't make up anything we do in class, and I have to miss sometimes for Extracurriculars. So I'll probably do all the HW I can.

Homework is indeed annoying when it is just busywork. I've noticed that a lot of my teachers only weigh that kind as 5/10/20 points, when regular assignments are worth like 100, so sometimes if you are doing relatively well in a class, you can sorta halfway do your homework. (I know this is terrible advice.)

Last year when I was completely overloaded, I found time to make a Grade Calculator in Java where I could input my grades and see what I really needed to do and how much it would effect my grade if I didn't. Sometimes, at the end it is only the difference between a 98 and 96, which really isn't a big deal. This calculator was also programmed to calculate my GPA, so I could really see the long term effects (or lack there of) of missing a few stupid HW assignments. You can actually make something less complex in Excel or Google Spreadsheets.

I went through a marking period last year where I barely did any homework at all. Terrible. It really hurt my grades (not too bad, but a big enough wake up call), so I suggest that you either decrease the workload and not put too much effort into the BS assignments, or just stick with it and take your A with pride.

BTW, does your teacher actually grade ALL of the out-of-the-book assignments or just check off that you have completed it? If it is the latter, seriously relax on the effort.

My teacher doesnt collect our hw...but if we didnt do it, he knows, because usually a week after its due he suprises us with a pop quiz (or sometimes pop-test....oh god!) about the hw (somehow he can make a quiz/test out of even the smallest assignments) and then everyone fails and cries and he tells us to go deal with it and not to slash his tires after school, lol

I think it's effecting me more becuase it's early in the semester so there aren't really assignments in the gradebook besides the HW and the one test we've taken.

We have another test on Halloween, so hopefully that will help me get back to an A. ^_^

"Half my teachers dont even count hw for a grade, to everyones sadness, and instead 82% of our grade is tests and 18% is quizes and projects -_-"

That's awesome. It's how more classes should be. Homework is copyable and answerable with a book or notes. Tests and quizzes, on the other hand, measure the skills, knowledge, and comprehension one has gained from a class in a controlled environment. I mean, homework can measure if you are a hard worker, but sometimes there are hard workers who just can't grasp some subjects... tests and quizzes can measure hard work by how much study you put into them to pass them.

lol I don't do homework except for spanish which is collected at the beginning of each class. hw is assigned daily in calc bc and stat but rarely collected and as long as i continue to get straight As the teachers don't mind
