I was recently accepted to Marymount academically with a Dean’s scholarship and I’m super happy about it! My audition is Feb 13 and I’m very eager to go. However, I was told recently by an alumni not to go to the school. He said that there was little performance opportunities, less than amazing training, and not much representation after you leave. My question is for any alumni here who could offer opinions on the program? I know I will have to go and see for myself but this has made me a little nervous. I’ve heard good things about the school but now I’m not so sure. Thank you for reading!!
So here’s my take. It’s kind of universal, but any school is going to be what you make of it. I know of one student who attended Marymount who did a national tour her senior year. I’ve seen Marymount in playbills for professional shows I have seen. I know 5+ students there currently and at least from being a few degrees separated (I’m friends with their moms), none of them have left Marymount thinking it wasn’t for them or it was a mistake. The students I know there are hard working and driven and ambitious, for sure, with a range of talent from “pretty good” to “having the ‘it’ factor.”
Obviously a big sell for that school is being located NYC–so don’t sell it short because many opportunities come from simply being in the city.
As a mom I’d say if A) it’s within your price range and B) you get a vibe that it’s a fit for you then C) keep it under consideration.
Best of luck with your decisions and congratulations!
