Hong Kong Colleges for International Applicant for Computer Science?

Hi. I'm interested in possibly applying as an international student to colleges in Hong Kong for a Computer Science major. Can someone please recommend colleges along with chances. If I do go to a foreign college, I intend to get a Masters in Computer Science in the US so the courses of colleges should be accredited by colleges in the US

My requirements for colleges:
-Classes taught in English
-Proximity to urban areas
-Accredited by colleges in US for when I apply for masters degree education.

Some personal background:
-My parents are citizens of Hong Kong
-I know basic Cantonese and am in the process of learning to read and write it.

Academic Performance

Major: Computer Science

Home State: New York

I do not believe that any of the HK CS programs are ABET accredited, but the degrees are all recognized by US universities for MS/PhD admissions.

Personally, I believe that HKUST offers a superior computer science program, with its curriculum mirroring top US programs. Many of its graduates go on for graduate studies in US institutions such as MIT, CMU, Stanford, UCB, etc.

HKUST and some other universities in HK have HKIE accreditation for CS. HKIE and ABET are in mutual recognition accords (Seoul Accord for computing, Washington Accord for engineering).

Thanks ucbalumnus. That;s really good to know.

PCHope, what do you say my chances are for HKUST?

Sent from my Xoom using CC

You should have excellent chance for HKUST. They are pushing for more international students. I’d also suggest to approach them regarding merit scholarship.

Computer sci used to be very competitive. I think it’s no longer the case (Globall biz and actuarial sci…etc take its place). I agree that being an international is a hook.

Thanks PCHope and Sam Lee. If I do go to college in HK, I plan to then return to the US for getting my masters at a top university. What arre the chances of this? Will I apply to an American university as a international student even if I have an Americna citizenship? Will I have a hard time applying to American universities for a masters program if I study my undergrad education in HK?

you won’t be treated as an international. regardless, it doesn’t make any difference in admission whether you are an American or international anyway. If anything, being an American that graduates from a pretty good university overseas probably would make you look a bit more interesting. HKU and HKUST are well-recognized within the academia world-wide; you have nothing to worry about.

As I have stated, HKUST typically sends dozens of its graduates to TOP US programs every year, mostly in science and engineering. Since the majority of the UST faculty hold doctoral degrees and/or worked in top US schools, and are active researchers, the students become highly competitive if they can get good reference letters.

You will be considered as a domestic applicant.

Thanks again PCHope and Sam Lee.
