Honor Code Violation.

I've been convicted of honor code violation at my high school for plagiarism in AP Art History. I've been accepted to several UC's. What will happen and what should I do?

It was an unintentional plagiarism; I've included the source and everything, so it should not be counted as plagiarism. My teacher didn't seem to cooperate with me well. Is it plagiarism to include a detailed description of an art piece and use it to present it to the class with the source link at the end of the mini essay? I didn't use the whole thing either; i've only made a few footnotes at the sides and the essay as just ... nothing else, really. I mean, I'm not claiming it to be my own piece, am I?

And the school just called, saying that I might not even be able to graduate. I think my teacher really put it up, this time. I asked her what sort of consequences I might get and she said, "a couple detentions, maybe." WOW. I can't believe this.. this isn't good. At all. What am I supposed to do now? It'll go on my transcript, and I might have to inform all the colleges I applied to about it. What do I have left to do? I really want to explain everything to the colleges, my school, and my reluctant teacher.

The situation that you’ve described is very unfortunate. I encourage you to work it out with your school.

That said, I don’t think it is wise for you to air the situation on this or other public forums. Your situation is unique enough that someone who knows of the incident (possibly at your school) can be referred to your post. It’s likely to make matters worse for you.

Get your parents involved and you may need a lawyer.

If your school is private, there is may not be too much that can be done as far as getting a diploma, but the legal action would be more to make sure that your UC admissions can’t be rescinded without due process. I think if you made sure that happened, then you will have accomplished a lot.

If you referenced the source, and did not try to pass the work off as your own, it is not plagiarism and you should fight questions on your integrity very hard if you in fact you are not guilty.

Being stupid is very different and much less severe than being dishonest.

Agree. Parents. Possibly attorney. I know of someone who JUST went through a much worse situation…their parent IS an attorney.Expulsion was considered, etc. Parent worked it out…they’re happily on their way to college. I don’t know your circumstances. But…if you’re legit…don’t let them put this HUGE barrier in the way of your future. I’m GUESSING they mostly want to scare the bejeebers out of you. Luck.

Also agree…don’t “air” this anymore. Read the answers but don’t post anymore. Your old posts may already have enough info on you to narrow you down.

Just get back to trying to clear it up.

More luck.
