got an email from student conduct telling me i was reported for an honor code violation. I honesltly am pretty nervous. Even though im on winter break i just can’t stop thinking about this.
after emailing the professor they mentioned that some of my work was similar to another students. I really don’t know how I’m suppose to defend myself in this situation. I have been working hard all semester trying to make sure i pass all my classes just for it to end in such a crappy way.
what kind of consequences get handed down to first time violators? all i see are people getting suspensions and kicked out but I’m not seeing what violations they committed for that to happen.
If you didn’t cheat, you should be able to address and hopefully have the issue resolved. Do you have rough drafts of your work? What subject? Did you rely on internet resources that perhaps another student also used?
In HS, I was accused of cheating. Teacher called me at home to confront me. I had not cheated and with some investigation all was resolved. An answer on a math test matched an alternate test given during the first period. However, I showed all my work and once the teacher retraced my work he could see my math error that led to the suspicious answer. I got the problem wrong, but I recall he gave me +2 points as an apology.
There are all types of recent stories about cheating and the honor system. It’s a big deal. If you did or let someone copy off of you I would look up on your school’s site what action is taken. If it’s severe you might want an educational lawyer to guide you.
If not, tell them you didn’t cheat. Tell them you didn’t communicate with that student and don’t know them (if true) .
Show them any work/drafts/scratch paper you have.
Let them know they can ask you how you arrived at your answer if you don’t have any of that.
If you did cheat…what happened? Did you ask a question of the other student? Did they ask you? Did you share info? Did you go to the same website/source of info that you shouldn’t have looked at?
The repercussions could go from nothing to a zero on the test/assignment to a F in the class.
