I'm curious what people think of the campaign to abolish or reform the Honor Council. Interesting that more than a quarter of students voted to abolish the Honor Council at the institution that started honor codes, no?

More people would have voted yes on the referendum if the Informer article had already been published. It’s pretty obvious the honor council has some serious issues, but I think with so much out in the open there will definitely be some real reform.

I don’t want prospective students to think the honor code doesn’t work. Students here take it very seriously, to the point that people end up adopting security habits that would be very reckless anywhere else and professors will often not proctor tests. It’s just that the institution we created to enforce it has not had enough transparency to keep itself honest.

I think its all overblown hype and a non issue, really. Are there structural problems with the honor council? Probably minor ones (their biggest gripe is that people are not told who is going to be sitting on the council soon enough and that the letter of the law is followed). That newspaper has taken it upon itself to blow up at every little thing. Just read some of their other articles and you’ll realize that its just like Fox News. The only people I know who don’t treat it like a joke are the editors, writers, and photographers themselves.

And again, just to be clear:
Honor Council != Honor Code
