Im a freshman at a CCC and I want to transfer to a UC within 2 years. Does taking honors courses and risking the fact of a lower GPA be worth it? I know honors courses will look great when you apply as a transfer student, but would the admission office prefer a higher GPA in non honor courses?

How much harder is an honor course from a non honor course? Are honors courses in college similar to AP/Honors classes in high school?

Anyone out there get into UCLA, UCI without taking any honor courses?

Thats a big misconception. Honors courses aren't 'hard.' Its just different kind of/more work. i took honors freshman composition, honors intro theatre and honors gen chem 2 and got a B+, B+ and A- respectively. I HONESTLY dont think i would have done any better taking the regular sections of these courses.

I was in a similar situation when my school offered me the honors program last semester. I was hesistant at first, but I think it's best to have as challenging a courseload as you can manage. You should consider giving it a try for a semester and see how things go; I assume you can always get out.

Could you have a lower GPA doing honors? Certainly. Although, you really have to ask yourself what is your ultimate goal: more engaging classes or a higher number on your transcript?

My CCC doesn't have Honor classes for the math and hard sciences. There were only Honor classes for the social sciences and English. I took English 1 Honors on campus and the only difference was that we had to participate in class discussions every day. It was still easier than the English 2 course I'm taking online.
