Honors and Awards: how specific?

This is for like the common app and whatnot…on the awards section…

For example, do i say:
“XXXX competition: placed 1st in the state in 9th grade, 2nd in 10 and 12th grades, 3rd in 11th grade”

or…
“XXXX Competition: State champion.”

which format should i use? the reason i ask is that if i use the 1st format, “briefly describe any scholastic honors” becomes a page long, while the 2nd format makes it almost seem like i have no awards…

<p>xxxx competition awards grades y-z, including nth place</p>

<p>Even if you won recognition every year for 4 years, it should only take up a couple of lines per award. Maybe something like this?
xxxxx competition. State champion 2004. Top 10 in 2001-2003.</p>
