My daughter got the mailing today and was told that her original Kentucky Heritage Scholarship was her final offer.
What a shame, with a ACT of 33 , 3.94 and Student Body officer, varsity sports , and many many activities and a job. She was holding out for UK, but she will be attending Alabama where she got full tuition.
Huddy17 - we are in the same boat! My Ds stats are very similar to your D and she only received the heritage as well. My D is devastated. However, she too has another option (USC Columbia). that she will probably accept. Amazing with those stats you would think they would at least get instate tuition equivalent.
D’17’s mailing confirmed she’s received a Patterson Scholarship. She interviewed for Singletary and was not selected for that, but the financial benefits of the two are equal.
Good luck to all others receiving the mailing!
Nothing in today’s mail, nothing new showing up on her Kentucky portal. It’s just showing the heritage scholarship.
Nothing for us either.
D has 34 ACT, in a sport, National honor society, Spanish honor society, straight As throughout HS, all honors and AP and Dual credit college courses, volunteers, Beta club, job, ranking is 1 of 350… didn’t get the Singletary. As a middle class family the Presidential is nice but leaves a lot to cover. Can’t apply for much else because we work for a living so FASFA says we have plenty -
@jcb224 I’m sorry your D is devasted about UK. The Hertitage is not too far away from in-state tuition! Shockingly, it puts it about equivalent to in-state at UIUC. Best of luck to your D at USC Columbia.
@huddy17 There is a lot of opportunity down at UA! Congrats on the full tuition scholarship and Roll Tide! In a short time, the disappointment will be in the rearview mirror!
@middleclassmom7 Full tuition awards are more than most people can expect; I’m sorry you’re disappointed and I hope your D has other good affordable options on the table.
Still waiting on letter but from stats I am seeing thinking our current offer is our final. Tuition is as if he was in state now but he has some great offers from Auburn and Alabama. Good luck everyone! Never thought I’d say this but I am looking forward to May.
Thank you for suggesting to look on the portal, D17 has been in tears waiting to hear about the Singletary. We are out of state and haven’t gotten anything in the mail. She is out of town now, but will look when she gets home.
@Midwest67 - Thank you for the kind words of encouragement!
D interviewed for the Singletary, but only received a Presidential. However, as a URM, the Presidential stacks with the diversity scholarship (Parker). Since she received a full Parker as well, her total scholarship package is thousands more than the Singletary. So we’re very happy here.
Good luck to all still waiting!
Found out that someone with a lower ACT and GPA than my daughter received the Presidential. She is heartsick over this, and is blaming herself. I don’t even know how to console her, since she met all the criteria and still didn’t get picked.
@acdaisy - my D has had the same experience.
It’s so hard to see our kids so unhappy! Please let your D know she is not alone. The admissions & scholarship awards do not always “make sense”. Lots of kids get heartbreaking news, but not everyone announces it to the world, so she might get the impression that everything is going well for everyone but her!
We had a very disappointed HS senior last year, who ended up at her safety, which was “acceptable” but not “love”. Overall, it was her #4 choice on her short list.
All of that angst, bitterness, disappointment is “so yesterday”. She is settling in at her school and has admitted “its growing on her”.
Hang in there! Most kids will bloom where they are planted, and learn to love the school that loves the back!
Maybe UK has systems issues. That portal is pretty terrible, and in general I really struggle to think the applicant pool at UK was just THAT strong.
@acdaisy - Our daughter is fairly similar in profile to yours. We got the $1500/year provost also. I thought they were being a bit stingy because she already has many credit hours picked up while in HS, or maybe there would be a better award later. Nope, got the final letter today, and the $6K is total award.
As another data point for others, D actually received a rejection notice for the honors program in the mean time. Of the 11 Schools, and Honors/Fellows/Etc. that she has applied for UK Honors is the only rejection she has received. It almost feels like someone sorted a spreadsheet wrong.
Just heard UK only gave out around 20 Singletary scholarships. That’s quite a bit less than they used to offer. Without merit options middle class kids will cease attending college if they want a life free of crushing debt.
I was asleep at the wheel and had no idea college had gotten so expensive. Our oldest did her first two years at community college, then two years at an in-state university. Our youngest was lucky enough to get a great merit package, so she went straight to a four year.
Everything is so expensive!
@middleclassmom7 May i ask where you heard that there were only 20? That is so much less than previous years.
My daughter received her letter today stating she is only receiving the Heritage scholarship.
She won’t be attending Kentucky.
Congrats on those who received the bigger scholarships!!
A department lead told my other daughter who attends UK. It’s definitely fewer than past years.
