I applied to Ohio state, but made the mistake of expressing interest in the Honors and Scholars Program. Should I call the admissions office and ask to opt out? Or should I write the essays and follow through? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Sami

As a courtesy I guess that you could let them know, but why don’t you wait. Maybe you’ll have a change of heart. If you get accepted I think you can opt out. I do not think the application is binding. we are OOS and my S applied for Scholars, but he hasn’t seen the school or have much information about the program other than what is on the website. If he gets in, he won’t know for sure until we get out to see the campus in February. Best of luck.

Alright thanks soccerdad. Just one more thing, isn’t it true that my application is not complete if I don’t submit the essays for the honors and scholars program?

I don’t think so. They are separate applications and I do not think it would hold up admissions as long as they get the app, transcript, recommendations and test scores. I would confirm this with admissions if you are concerned.

OSU admissions will see that you have pending essays. The essay is only for Scholars, not Honors. If you no longer wish to be considered for scholars, you could simply state that in the essay field and submit it. If you are even considering it, you could just write a shorter essay - some of the scholar groups are not very competitive.

As far as Honors, it is determined only based on ACT score. The cut-off has been between 29-31 composite in the past. You will not “take away” the spot of a deserving student if you are admitted and then decline. Unless there is some reason that you cannot ever be designated an Honors student, I would recommend waiting to see if you are accepted and then make you decision.
