Honors/AP classes

so basically i don't think that I can go to a good school right now, because I am not in many AP or honors classes. I was in 3 freshman year, and 2 sophomore year (this year). I would like to be in more, but to get moved up you need to have a 97+ average in a CP class. I fall a little short of that, so now I can't get moved up. Next year, I am going to take another 2 honors course, and senior year, 2-3 APs.

Do you think that is enough honors/AP's to get into a good college?

Because right now, I don't think I can get into any school that I want to go to...

ill be honest with you here to get into a top top college, i.e any of the ivies or those top tier schools, if your school offers honors and aps you better be taking every single one of them or pretty close to it and pulling a’s and a+'s down the line. and if you aren’t doing that then it should be because you are so busy every day after school dedicating hours to a sport or extra curricular endeavor. now with that said its not too late! just keep up hard work in the classes you are in trying to get your personal best grades, throw yourself into some extraordinary volunteer pursuit, and start prepping to get awesome sat scores! there are many ways into top colleges and they take a holistic approach, honors and aps are important but not the sole determining factor.

Honors prob. matters if the school offers them. APs sometimes. For example my sister and I went to two different private high schools where every course offered was an honors course, yet we both only took 3 AP classes during all of highschool.

We both got into a top LAC her being Middlebury

APs aren’t the sole factor in college decision, but the school does want to see that you’ve challenged yourself and have taken the hardest route possible.

I’m not sure about the Ivies but you most likely will get into a good college.

yea, i go to private school, and sports are very serious, so my parents don’t want me to do to much. i definitely do not want to go to an ivy though…

You must take the most rigorous curriculum availiable or else colleges will not even consider you and you will be stuck in community college IF YOU ARE LUCKY.

yea community college, sure, sure. i don’t think my school has ever sent a kid to community college.

I have a question.

If you decide to take ONE regular course (even though there is an Honors course) in high school, does that automatically give you a big disadvantage in college admissions to top colleges?

Automatically? probably not. Big disadvantage? Probably not. Colleges look at your schedule as a whole, and they’ll pay close to attention to what “course rigor” your guidance counselor gives you. If the one course was the deciding factor between “most rigorous” or “somewhat rigorous”, then that might affect admissions. However, I doubt that any GCs would mark someone down from “most rigorous” for only one normal course.
