Honors at Graduation/Commencement

Although it is still a long way in the future for me as an ungrad, I was wondering what types of Honors are available at graduation.

There are honors like cum laude, magna cum laude, and summa cum laude (in ascending significance). Cum laude is like top 7%, summa is top 5%, and magna is top 3%. Something like that. Good luck with that! Keep your motivation high and make UCI cooler :].

Summa is top 1%, Magna is the next 3% after that, and Cum Laude is the next 8% after that.

So to get some kind of Latin honor, you have to be in the top 12% of your school.

There are also other awards like Phi Beta Kappa and several departmental awards you can earn.

what about Dean's List? dont you get that every quarter when ur GPA exceeds 3.5 or something? any scholarships? im curious to know too

Yeah, you get Dean's List if you get a 3.5 with at least 12 graded units. But being on the Dean's List is not an honor at graduation. It's just a line on your transcript each time you qualify.

As for scholarships, you must apply for those, and it's a lot of work. You really have to be competitive about it, but it helps to start thinking about it early (freshman or sophomore year). For a list of some of the prestigious scholarships you can apply for, go to http://www.scholars.uci.edu.

Wow, I didn't know it was all organized for us. Thanks a bunch alicantekid. I need to start preparing for these. My cousin said fellowships are a good way to gain prestige for grad school.
