Graduation GPA

Hi. I have a question about Graduation GPA in relation to the Latin Honors.

The DPR states the following:
"
Honors with the Bachelor's Degree are
awarded according to your overall GPA
at GRADUATION. To be eligible, YOU MUST
HAVE COMPLETED 90 OR MORE GRADED UNITS AT
THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Coursework
taken on the Education Abroad Program will
apply.
Required GPAs in effect in your graduating
year determine your eligibility and are
subject to change on an annual basis.
Effective Fall 2009, the following apply:
CUM LAUDE: 3.648 min. overall GPA
MAGNA CUM LAUDE: 3.786 min. overall GPA
SUMMA CUM LAUDE: 3.879 min. overall GPA "

I know it sounds small, but I'd like to try for one of the honors distinctions. But I was wondering, does SPRING quarter count as part of my Graduation GPA?

I ask because Graduation ceremony is held the FRIDAY of Finals week of Spring Quarter - I would have just finished my finals, so none of that quarter would apply to my "GPA at Graduation?"

Is this the correct interpretation? I'm hoping a recent graduate can shed some light on this info. In regards to this, I've heard diplomas are NOT received at the graduation ceremony, but afterwards. Is GPA notated on the diploma? How about any Latin Honors distinctions?

Thank you!

go easy on the caps lock

It’s a copy-and-paste from the DPR…

Just a guess, but maybe there is nothing special at the ceremony, but it is noted on your transcript and diploma, which you actually get at a later date?

That’s what I was thinking but wasn’t sure - they didn’t make it terribly clear…

I think I recall that they did have a part where they mentioned what type of honors each person had, so that’s a pretty good question. The booklet that came with our departmental graduation also listed what honors each student had.

In engineering, I don’t think Spring grades factor into Latin honors. They were already determined in the middle of the quarter as the booklet was being prepared.

I think you may receive additional cords during graduation, not sure though.

I was also wondering, do you get anything special for Latin Honors? Like if you do get the honors, does UCLA also give you a special tassel or a medal or anything?

My sister graduated Summa Cum Laude, they didn’t make a big deal of it at the graduation, they just said she was Summa when she was called up. And like someone else said, I think you get some special tassle or something.

Thanks for the input guys kind of frustrating, spring grades could make a huge difference for me!!

This has all the info you need:

[HSSEAS OASA | Commencement - Honors at Graduation](http://www.seasoasa.ucla.edu/Commencement/honors.html)

In a related question, if you’re a summer graduate and you’re on track to graduate cum laude/magna/summa, then are Latin Honors recognized at graduation? ie. cords and graduation program? Or is your name just blank and you have to deal? Thanks!

I mean, I read this on the link:

Candidates for Spring 2010 graduation will be eligible to wear the gold fourrageres based on their grades through Winter 2010 since their final grades will not be available at the time of Commencement.

But I just wanted to make sure it’s the same for summer grads
