Honors Choices?? Conflicted and Confused…

I was admitted into the Honors program, and will be participating in it for the entirety of my stay at UW, due to a godsend of an Honors scholarship.

I also plan to do Early Fall Start and a FIG (though likely with an extra class outside of the FIG).

There are so many opportunities to immerse oneself in the Honors community – Honors housing, the two EFS Honors courses, the 1-2 Honors FIGs UW tends to offer – that I’m not sure which to participate in, and which to pass on. Ideally, I would live in Honors housing in Lander, and take the EFS and FIG Honors courses so as to get an early start on that pesky Core that none of my AP credit fulfills.

However, I’m afraid this would be too much of a good thing, and I’d spend my first year in an Honors-bubble, since most to all of the kids in my classes and on my floor would be from the program.

Any advice?

I’d pass on the fig because I’ve heard less-than-desirable things about it, but that’s just me. I wouldn’t worry about being in a bubble though, UW is a GIANT place and you’ll be meeting people EVERYWHERE–don’t think you’re just limited to classmates and roommates

Also, Honors students typically take ONE honors course per quarter, so that still leaves two “regular” courses to meet non-Honors kids.

And finally, the Honors community itself is huge. Something like 225 per grade? So even if you did only meet them, you wouldn’t be “limiting” yourself.

Hope I helped, and congrats again on the Mary Gates!

I don’t see or feel an Honors bubble at all. Most of my friends are from outside of the Honors program - mostly departmental friends. When you meet new people, people don’t ask if you’re in Honors or not.

Yes, Honors students typically take an Honors courses per quarter, but you could take two a quarter, or not take any during a given quarter (like me this quarter!).

Congrats on your scholarship!
