i got into the WISE program which i think is a subset of the honors program (women in science and engineering) and have an interview there coming up for the scholars in medicine program... we'll see :)

i think it is too late... the deadline was like december. gosh i have no idea what to expect for the interview.. and dont know whether i should go if i even get in. i heard stony brook isnt the most exciting place to be.. i dunno

JenC, if you're admitted to SFM, then you're probably going to want to take advantage of that. It's not every day that high school seniors get admitted to med school! I'm sure dozens of people on this forum wish they were in your position. Have you visited campus? Talked with our students? Have you gone to any of our programs for admitted students? I like to think we have a pretty vibrant campus. Don't let other people make your college decision for you, especially when you're talking about honors program opportunities. If you have any questions, please let me know.

JB, yes, it's too late to apply for SFM. Deadline was 12/31.

Well yea, thats what I have to do and what I am planning to do. If I get in, it will be a serious consideration. I think I have more exploring to do.

jenc-
My daughter passed on even trying for the wise program in medicine -she didn't want to go to Stonybrook. Well she is kicking herself now. When she applied to colleges she got a guaranteed transfer to Cornell after a year at a different college so she went to Stony Brook for a year and then she went to Cornell. She really liked Stony Brook and thought of staying there. While she was at Stony Brook she told me she should have done that medicine program because it would have been a good thing.

really? Its just I have gotten into a few medical programs, and making a decision on one is very difficult, because they are all amazing programs. I am looking for the advantages at stony brook, I honestly just don't know enough about the school. It definetly has a few things going for it in my views... Its near my granparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins who live no more than twenty minutes away. It has a large Jewish population and a kosher meal plan, which is important to me. Other than that, I really haven't heard so much about the on campus life. I've just heard it has a large commuter population... I really will have to spend a night or two there I think.

jenc89, you should definitely take a closer look at SB. It has changed dramatically in the last 5 years, since we looked at it for my other dtr. My graduating senior dtr got into several schools with her Occupational Therapy program, but chose SB because of the nice-sized (not too big or too small) campus, outstanding science/medical reputation (their medical school is so competitive, even SB grads have trouble getting in, unless already guaranteed with the freshman program you're applying for), new bldgs going up all the time, etc. The commuter issue is not a concern, as thousands of students live (and stay) on campus (we're in NJ, so this is important) Also, the Hillel and Chabad are both very active and my dtr can eat at the kosher deli anytime with the meal plan. You should make a visit for a campus tour and check out all the info at the admissions office..the ppl there are all very nice and eager to help.

wow thanks for all of that information! I really do need to look into it more. Honestly, the reason I wasn't sure was because when I spoke on the phone to one of the people from the medical school admissions board, she told me that even in the program, I would have to get atleast a 34 on my mcats in order to get in. I checked the site today, and apparently I only need around the national mean, which is supposedly a 30. I just didn't see the difference between if I got into the program or not, if I would still need atleast a 34 either way. But, I was wrong... which is actually great news. The more I think about it, the more I'm starting to think that stony brook would be an ideal place for college and medical school.

Glad to help. If you get in the SFM, you are guaranteed a place in the med school! thats why sbuadmissions told you to go for it if accepted! And feel free to contact Alexis at Hillel if you want more info about their activities, Shabbat dinners, etc. We spoke to her for quite a while and they have plenty of things going on!

I'm pretty sure it's just the national mean that you need to get. Either way, I don't think anyone in the program has ever failed to earn their spot. They do everything they can to keep you in the program; they're investing the time and money into you. It's not a "weeding out" kind of thing.
