Honors College Application Question

Despite having a D in the honors college, we're a bit confused at the admissions instructions given on the USC website.

"Honors supplement. Honors College applicants should submit their general University application and the Honors College/Top Scholars supplemental application together as one complete document. Qualified students will be invited to complete the Honors/Top Scholars application online. If you choose to complete this portion of the application at a later date, or you weren't given access to this portion of the application, you may download a print version instead"

It seems they first instruct applicants to submit university application and honors supplement at the same time, but in the next sentence they state that qualified students will be asked to apply to Honors. Son can't access honors portion on his on-line application, yet his test scores are higher than that of D who was admitted.

He can call admissions next week, but thought CC friends could shed some light. In summary, his questions are:

1) Does he need to submit general application and wait to be asked to complete honors?
2) Should he submit his general application and honors supplement all at the same time -- or can he do that separately?

I’m not completely sure, since i’m not applying for the honors college, but many of my friends have said that unless you have a 1300, you can’t apply for the honors college until later.

But the Honors College professor who came and spoke at my school last week said that it was a a 2 step process… which made it sound like you had to apply to the college first.

November 15, 2010: South Carolina Honors College and Top Scholars Application Deadline

Students applying for the South Carolina Honors College and/or top University scholarships must submit a completed* Honors/Scholars application along with the general University application by November 15, 2010. These students will be considered for the SC Honors College and the University’s most prestigious merit scholarships, including Carolina, McNair, and Alumni Scholars awards. Those who meet this deadline will receive notification of their University admissions decision by mid-December. Some Honors College admissions decisions will also be released in December. All Honors College applicants will receive an honors decision letter no later than mid-February.

We prefer students to submit the general application and Honors College application together. However, if you have already submitted the general application, you can still apply for the Honors College by requesting a paper application.

If I remember correctly, when you input your scores and grades, if you meet the cutoff, a pop-up window will ask you if you want to apply to the honors college - then you do the supplement.

I just applied and the honor’s college application pops up after you submit the undergraduate application if your sat or act scores fall within their range.

Thanks so much for the assistance! No pop ups for S’s application, yet he clearly meets the criteria. We’ll call Admissions next week just to be safe.
