Honors College at Mizzou

Does anyone have experience with the Honors College? Do honors-level classes fill up fast? Have you lived in an honors dorm? Any feedback or recommendations appreciated.

My d lived in Twain in the Honors Journalism FIG. She LOVED it. I would definitely recommend it, or ANY FIG for freshmen. She also loved her honor classes. They have a LOT to choose from for your requirements(for instance, basic level psych, bio, journalism, etc.)that are much smaller than the regular classes and are much more stimulating. When possible, she always chooses an Honors class over the regular ones. Also, their Humanities sequence is unbelievable!

Sounds great. We have the Honors College folks on our list for our visit Monday. We have a LOT on our list! Twain and Schurz (sp?) are the two dorms that have journalism honors FIGS next fall. Schurz seems to be under renovation and will reopen in the fall. We'll check them both out, because I guess housing information will be coming soon. Any comments on those two dorms?

We are excited about our trip. My S has been reading about the rec complex, and would be just thrilled to have both a climbing wall and a lazy river!

mizzou mom-what kind of courses did your daughter take? I'm definitely interested in journalism and am looking at Mizzou for that reason, so I'm wondering if I should consider the honors college?

Courses in J-school or Honors?

Honors, sorry. I thought you meant there was a specific set of courses for both honors college and j-school students.

Schurz is older, so probably why it is being renovated. I lived in Mark Twain back in the days when it was a private dorm--and the only one that had suites (2 doubles with a bathroom in between). I really like it--and it had its own outdoor swimming pool, though not huge--and the new rec complex has amazing pools, btw!!

S2 would live in Mark Twain for his J-school FIG if he decides to go to Mizzou!

geezermom~good pm'ing with you--I saw your most recent, and will write you tomorrow(today) with some trip suggestions!!

geezermom-Please post when you get back. We are planning our trip now for early March and S is getting very excited. (Me too!) Any suggestions would be very welcome.

We visited Mizzou yesterday and talked to several people about the Honors College. What I like about it is the variety of possibilities: you can live in an honors learning community or honors Freshman Interest Groups, take honors sections of core courses as well as honors seminars, and do honors course sequences in the humanities, science, and other disciplines. You can participate in whatever way is best for you. My S has decided he wants to live in a Journalism Honors FIG, which we heard good things about. Students told me they haven't had problems with courses filling up (except a seminar on the history of baseball!). If you're interested, contact the program for more information. There's not quite enough on the web site, in my opinion, but the handouts we received yesterday were really helpful.
