Hi! I noticed a thread was not made for honors acceptances yet so I thought I would make one… I was super ecstatic to get my acceptance in the mail yesterday! Currently, I’m deciding between Furman, Clemson, and CofC honors. I applied to Clemson Honors but I am still waiting to hear back.
Also for prospective students wondering what my stats are…
GPA: 94.1/100
SAT: 1410
8 APS
great essays and reccommendations
strong resumé
intended major: Communications… I really want to minor in Environmental Studies/ Sustainability if I go to CofC.
@wildflowers98 My son was in your shoes last year. He was also accepted into Calhoun Honors and was invited to scholarship weekend at Furman . He was also accepted at Wofford and Winthrop. He proudly attends The Honors College at CofC as a William Aiken Fellow. He couldn’t be happier with his decision and is thriving at CofC . Great program. Congrats. He heard back from Calhoun the second weekend in February. Were you invited to the interview weekend at CofC ?
I, unfortunately, was not invited to interview weekend. I don’t think I was neccessarily expecting to get invited but I was a little sad. Nevertheless, I am super excited to be admitted to the HC. I was drawn to the school my junior year because I liked the idea of going to college in downtown Charleston while simultaneously having a strong academic curriculum. Also, having gone to a small rigorous private school my entire life, I like the idea of being in a smaller academic environment with attention from professors. I do, however, have a few concerns with the school. As a whole, I know CofC’s student body is considered to be apathetic. Also, I am planning on rushing for a sorority no matter where I go, but the intense drug culture kind of frightens me. I really like Clemson a lot and I think I will be given a lot of opportunities to be involved, but I worry if I don’t get into honors, it will not be as good of a fit for me. There are a lot of things about a large school that I find attractive, but having close relationships with my professors is very important to me. I love Furman, my dad is a proud alumn and the school has almost been like another home to me over the years, considering how many times I’ve visited and have done programs there. -: of right now my scholarship sounds nice (20 grand a year), but if i really want to make it work, I’m going to have to be invited to interview weekend, which I am not sure will happen. I also love Furman because it’s in the mountains and in Greenville. But most importantly, their strong program in sustainability science really sets it apart from my other schools. I did an academic camp last summer there I. Sustainability and absolutely loved it. However, if I cannot get all the money I need, Furman is going to have to be a no. At this point, I know I want to go to law school for environmental law or get my masters in sustainability or environmental practices, so I don’t want my family to have to spend a ridiculous amount of money for my undergrad education. @carolinamom2boys
@wildflowers98 The drug culture is no more prevalent at CofC than Furman or Clemson. Drugs and alcohol are readily available on every college campus in the country if one chooses to participate. I also would not overgeneralize CofC students to be apathetic . My son attends school with students who were accepted at super selective schools including William and Mary, Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech and some Ivies. In terms of Furman scholarships , here’s info from last year’s scholarship weekend. There were 1200 applicants. 48 students were invited to interview for 10 Hollingsworth, 5 Townes and 4 Lays scholarships. As you can see , it is quite competitive . Based on some of your comments, I do have some concerns about your ability to be happy at any other school. And just FYI, CofC has a strong sustainability program.

Thank you! And I by no means was making negative comments about the honors program. I was just going off of heresy by what students of the regular college told me. And you’re right, drugs are on every college campus. I am aware of the CofC sustainability program and if I were to go I would be very interested in trying to intern with the office of sustainability. I also am drawn to CofC because of its strong study abroad opportunities. I apologize if I was being overly negative, because there are many positives of the school, and I’m very thankful to have been accepted. Also, I know interview weekend is very, very competitive at Furman and even if I were lucky enough to be invited, my chances of getting Hollingsworth are not strong. I have given a lot of interest to the school, really since I was about three. If money is an issue and I really want to go there, we will probably try to contact the school. We know family friends who have had a positive experience in the past from doing that. Again, I did not at all mean to come across as have negative feelings towards CofC. We have had family friends who have died due to heroin overdose and others to unfortunate circumstances that happened on that campus. I’m a fairly responsible kid, and I think if I decide to go to CofC, I will definitely be able to find my niche, especially within the honors program. @carolinamom2boys
Hello! I got my honors admissions acceptance today!
GPA: 4.625 on the SC Uniform Scale
Rank: 20/456
SAT: 1280
ACT: 28
8 APs
Yearbook editor, school and club soccer captain, stage manager for theatre club, section head and writer for two magazines, 100+ community service hours
Great rec and my essay was very unique. (I wrote about the time a celebrity pronounced my name wrong. Weird and possibly vapid, but it worked!)
Congrats to everyone who got in! I didn’t think I would make it because my test scores are a bit on the low side, but I made up for it in my essay and my extracurriculars really showed who I am. Initially, I was sad because I did not get into honors at UofSC, but this definitely made me feel better. Once I hear back from Virginia and UCLA, I’ll make my decision, but for right now CofC Honors is looking pretty good to me!
does anyone know when an honors Facebook group will be up and running?
Just thought that I’d share this info. Received the Honors College newsletter today . Dr Folds Bennett stated in the newsletter that this has been the most competitive year yet with over 1500 applicants for 200 spots.
Wow, that a lot of applications! Anxiously awaiting the mail delivery everyday, but nothing yet. OOS. Any idea of when we should hear?
I am still waiting as well and I am OOS as well.
Another OOS in my advisory who also applied to the honors program is waiting as well.
They shouldn’t tell us that we will hear by the end of January and still keep up waiting.
It is Feb 1. It may depend on where you are and the mail.
We did hear last Thursday - waitlisted
For anyone waitlisted, remember that you can apply after one semester .
