Honors College/Top Scholars Class of 2024

@ShrimpBurrito Sorry for the additional question - I don’t think i have enough posts yet for PM - is your son looking to club swim at all or collegiate swim?Mine definitely wants to be part of a strong club team since he won’t be able to collegiate swim unless some kind of walk on miracle happens. And curious to see if the string of commonalities continues - my son’s strongest event is 200BR and BR in general but prefers long course and distance events. No worries if you don’t want to share since it is not relevant to this thread.

@henry111 I was able to PM you! :relaxed:

In couriosity, has any one actively posting here that has been accepted to USC honors and hoping to be considered for Top Scholars been accepted to HYPS or any other Ivy in the early action rounds? I was hoping to gauge in reality the likelihood of USC honors attracting and swaying HYPS students. Feedback appreciated.

Ivys don’t do early action - only early decision.

Thank you. 3.0 is reasonable. I’ve heard some schools set it at 3.5 and it causes a lot of havoc for students and families when scholarships are lost over a 3.4 GPA, etc.

@watson18 actually HYP do in fact do non binding early action. It’s restrictive meaning you can only apply to a single one of them however it’s non binding. You can however apply to any public school at same time, such as USC in this case.

I think HC has an escalating GPA requirement each year 3.0-3.3 so by the end of your senior year you have to have a 3.3 to graduate with honors

@PAdude My son was accepted to the honors college at USC. He applied, and was deferred at Princeton.

@MelSpears would you accept Princeton full pay over scholarship at USC honors if he would get in in RD?

@PAdude Princeton was his number one choice. As all of the decisions are getting closer, he has started leaning toward staying in state(we live in S.C.) he will graduate with over 60 college credits and would lose them if he decided on Princeton. So, I’m hoping he will stay in state, but the decision will be mostly his.

@PAdude, sorry just re read your post. He would have to get significant financial aid to go to Princeton. Money will also be a huge factor in this decision.

Does anyone know if the Top Scholars invites will go out next Tuesday via FedEx? I think that’s when it’s gone out the last couple of years

We are also in-state SC and my daughter was accepted into Honors with the first wave. We are hoping on an interview but the chances are extremely slim for that. She just got rejected for Foundation Fellow at UGA last night which we did expect to happen. The chances at USC could be slightly higher since they invite 50 in-state students and at UGA it is 57 total finalists.
My daughter did not apply at any Ivy though, she had no interest in any of them. She applied at Vandy and Northwestern RD knowing that she will most likely get rejected by both. Did your son apply and is considering anywhere else in SC besides USC?

@UpstateSCmom he applied, and was accepted at Clemson. We are still waiting for Calhoun honors decision. He also applied, and was accepted at CCU. But, his high school is on the CCU campus, and he has been attending CCU classes since freshman year. He would like to go somewhere else, to have a new experience. We are still waiting for Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, University of Florida, Princeton, and MIT. Every conversation we’ve had in the last two weeks, he has expressed wanting either Clemson or USC.

@UpstateSCmom did your daughter apply anywhere else in S.C.?

That is great news for you meaning in-state tuition and probably Palmetto Fellow. Definitely the most affordable option. Congrats to your son! I am sure he will end up at the perfect school for him.

my daughter did not apply at Clemson, even though we live in Greenville which is only 45 min away from Clemson. She did apply at Furman though. We have not heard from them yet but since that is literally 15 min from our house, I highly doubt she would go there.

@UpstateSCmom Furman has such a beautiful campus! Good luck to your daughter also! This college process has certainly been stressful, I’m looking forward to decision time?

Does anyone know if a second wave of HC acceptances went out yet? My daughter appears to fit the criteria based on last year, but we haven’t heard anything yet.

@SandyCollege I have a friend whose daughter got in last year in the second wave. She received her package mid February. I’m not sure if they will do the same this year. Good luck to your daughter!
