Hi I've been looking into colleges and I was wondering if you guys thought it would be better to go to the Barrett honors college or an ivy league, thanks for any inpu

“Better” is a relative term. It depends on your preferences, major, financial aide, etc.

If you’re asking about prestige, the Ivies are still considered more prestigious, but that shouldn’t be deciding factor.

The daughter of a man who used to post often on the Parents forum turned down Yale in favor of a full scholarship to an honors program at a small southern LAC. She excelled there, and is now at Yale medical school. Not going to an Ivy for undergrad didn’t hurt her one bit :)

If it makes a difference I plan on majoring in environmental science or something Similar

Until you have actually applied, been accepted, and have received your financial aid packages, there really isn’t much point in asking this question.

Sit down with your parents and have The Big Money Talk so that you know how much they are ready, willing, and able to pay for your education. Once you know the financial part, you can look around for places that are good academic and financial matches.

I was actually in your shoes not too long ago. I had just gotten off the waitlist to the University of Pennsylvania but I was enrolled in an in-state university, in its honors accelerated degree program with a decent scholarship. In the end I chose Penn but not just because it’s Ivy League.

Remember your decision will stick with you for apprx the next 4yrs(unless you transfer). Check out the surrounding city. Find out what the atmosphere on campus is like. Where do you see yourself fitting best?

And of course, only time will tell if we’ve made the right decision.

I would cross this bridge if you actually have those choices and I would worry more about actually GETTING IN to an ivy league school than trying to decide NOW if you will give it up for another school.
