Honors College - yes or no?

D has been invited to apply for the Honors College. Neither of us remember it being mentioned on the campus tour...don't know if it would be a good idea. Any opinions?

I’m in the honors program here at DePaul and I absolutely love it. The class sizes are smaller (most are capped at 20), the students are very intelligent, and we get priority when choosing classes. Not to mention, graduating from DePaul as a member of the honors program will show on the student’s degree. I’d encourage your daughter to apply to the program.

D is bright but is not a super-fast reader. Do you think the honors classes require a lot more reading than the other classes?

What is the general academic rigor of your classes in general?

I don’t believe her reading abilities would hinder her performance in honors classes. From my experience, most reading in honors classes is done outside of class which allows the student to read at his or her pace. In terms of the rigor of the classes, I’d have to say that honors classes are more challenging, intellectually and homework-wise, but being surrounded by students of exceptional ability helps guide you through the class. Also, if she does find that it isn’t for her (whatever the reason may be), she will always have the option of dropping the honors program.

Sounds like a good fit. She’s always preferred to be in AP classes even if she makes a B to regular classes where she’d make an easy A, because she wants to be around the smartest students.
