Has anyone been accepted to the Honors College? My D got a letter about it at the end of last week. Anyone planning to live in the Honors Dorm?

i just got my packet today and i was surprised that i got into the honors college. i havnt done any research with anything yet but i am probably going to live in the dorms cuz i heard they are bigger and better. is this true or is it just a rumor? merblajam, did you get the faculty award for 7,000 for the next 4 years?

I got accepted after i improved my sat I score, sent in that card thing already, i probaly wont live in a honors dorm cuz i dont want to limit myself to socializing only with honors students ( dont tink just cuz ur not honors student means ur a party animal ha) instead i chose northwest neighborhood (academic floor). tried to balance it out :)

which dorm comparably is the biggest for freshmen. i dont care about whether its honors or not but i just want a nice, comfortable dorm for the next year. maybe joining a frats house is a better idea.. i dunno any advice?

Yes, let's get some IU dorm/neighborhood advice going here! Son accepted, waiting to hear from other colleges, but needs to send in the housing app in the meantime.

colderemy--You don't go through frat rush until you get on campus. You could join as a freshman and live in the frat house as a sophomore.

do you mean 'biggest' as in most popular, or literally the biggest?

they're all pretty big, size-wise. many of them have similar room layouts (briscoe, forest, teter, mcnutt, and foster.) wright has smaller rooms and eigenmann has some smaller some bigger, depends on your price range. they recently did renovations there. i haven't been in the read dorm.

popularity wise, it totally depends on your preference!

GT--Are you currently a student there? We've been told to choose a neighborhood close-by to your intended major for convenience to classes, like near the Kelley school, for instance. Also, what about choosing a dorm based on the specialty groups like fitness, athletics, etc.?

Colderemy: Yes, my D got the $7K/4 year Faculty award. She's going to apply for the Honors College $$ also.

i went to IU last year. the campus is so small i found that it didnt totally matter where you live fresh year and its not like all of the classes you/your child will take fresh year will be within their major. nevertheless, NW neighborhood is closest to the kelley school. if you want athletics, NW is also where to go. it is close to the football and soccer (little 500) stadium and assembly hall. briscoe has a fitness and wellness floor, which allows use of the fitness center in the dorm. its also not far from the SRSC. i worked there and it was a 5-10 min walk.

Thanks GT--do you recommend specifying one of the specialty groups/floors or just a general neighborhood? The housing literature makes the specialties (athletics, fitness) sound appealing but, of course, it may not be that big of a deal in reality. BTW, did you graduate, transfer from IU?

I think I need to visit before I determine where I want to apply for dorms. I'm also considering applying for the Honors College, as they accept applicants who were borderline acceptances (which I was). GoBlue - your S looking into applying to the Honors College? Or is he just doing the dorms and the regular classes?

Wolves--He hasn't mentioned H.C., but what are the required stats? Similar to Kelley D.A.? He'll probably opt regular track so he gets the grades needed to get into Kelley or S.M. If he did do Honors, I could almost guarantee he wouldn't want the Honors dorm. He liked the sound of the Fitness and Wellness Living Learning Center or the Sports and Society Community both of which are in the Northwest neighborhood (near Kelley).

They are similar, but you would have been notified if you qualified. They are a little higher than Kelley EA, but it's like admissions, they take the amount of applicants that they can fit in the dorm.

Where can I find out about these athletic communities? Are they in the admissions packet? Those sound great, especially the Sports and Society community. And near Kelley is great, but I wonder where it is in relation to HPER (where SM classes are).

Also that makes sense about the non-Honors, it would be easier to get the better grades. Less stress as well, as the workload won't be as bad. And if I want to transfer, my GPA will be better :)

Well, that answers that question about Honors. Unfortunately, he just missed Kelley's ACT cut-off (28 composite; 30 English/writing; 11 writing) so it looks like he'll just have to kick some *** and get accepted once he's there. He got a big brochure about housing in the acceptance package which describes all the options. You also can get the same info. off their website. Not sure where the S.M. classes are located relative to the N.W. neighborhood. And, what's this talk about transferring? I know what you're thinking...to U of M perhaps?? LOL !! I honestly think once you-guys spend a year down in Bloomington, you're going to forget all about that idea.

LOL! You know me too well.

goblue- yeah, i went there for freshman year and transferred out to a school i love (i was planning on transferring after 2 years because i was OOS and it cost too much, but got in after 1). anyway, i recommend the fitness and wellness floor. i knew a bunch of people in it. i wished i was in it because i was an exercise science major there, but i didnt know about it when i was selecting a neighborhood! i did live in Briscoe, though, just not on the floor. briscoe is a great dorm!! the only bad part was that you had to walk up and down an annoying hill on Fee lane to get to campus- as well as to the food court. im a fast walker, and it took me about 10-15 mins to get from briscoe to HPER, which is basically at the center of campus.

oh yeah- and if youre not automatically accepted to the honors college it's easy to get in. just get a 3.6 or higher your 1st semester and theyll send you a nice little invitation! then you just have to go to a meeting and fill out a quick app.

GT--Great info. about the Fitness floor and Briscoe. Sounds like a good option. Do you happen to know the dorm/floor where the Sports and Society Community is located? Son is looking at Kelley and/or the Sport Marketing/Management major in HPER. You mentioned having to hike it for your meals. Are most of the food courts/cafeterias located in Collins? Would that be an advantage to choosing that dorm?

the food court in the NW neighborhood is in Foster (where you have to walk to from Briscoe) if you look on a campus map you shoudl see it.
Wright (central neighborhood) has a food court as well. the rooms in Wright are much smaller than other dorms, though, and the floors are smaller so you have less people on your floor to meet.
Collins LLC has a buffet-style food place (I believe Reed also has the buffet-deal) to tell you the truth, though, Collins is mostly hipster/hippy type folks. many upperclassmen also live there. and many music school students live in reed because it's near the music school.
i dont know where the sports and society floor is located, but im sure you can check it out online somewhere.
living in briscoe was great. there was a good mix of people, and everyone was really nice. we were all big on IU sports, partying, and hanging out. some people say briscoe is a really loud dorm, but i didn't really notice it! this all pretty much goes for foster and mcnutt in the NW neighborhood too- nw is definitely known on campus as the party dorms.

GT -- Let's see...do I tell my son that N.W. is party central? That would be a slam dunk for him--he's a major social animal. LOL!! Anyway, I just called the housing assignments office. The woman said they don't release information about which dorms house the theme communities like Sports or the LLC's like Fitness. At least I know that Fitness is in Briscoe, thanks to you. I guess they don't want kids zeroing in on specific dorms, just neighborhoods. She said the workout facility (in Briscoe) is as good or better than the campus rec center and that only the fitness kids use it. If you're still in contact with any friends from IU, ask them where the Sports Community is located...and thanks again for all your insider information!
