What are my daughters chances of getting into the Honors college. She is ranked 15% at her high school. Very competitive school in the suburbs of Houston. Her GPA weighted is 4.55 and her unweighted is 3.75. Her Sat is a 1280 She missed the priority deadline by a few days and now we are still waiting to here. She is accepted into engineering at Purdue but of course with the out of state costs. We are trying to make a decision, Thanks
When you say SAT, is that total out of 2400 or is it combined math and critical reading?
If it’s out of 2400, then you’ve got a serious problem on your hands. If it’s just the combined math and critical reading, then you’ve still got a problem.

She’ll only qualify for a $12,000 merit scholarship that’s given out over all four years, so only about $1,500 semester. Texas Tech will cost you about $10,000 per semester. Are you guys ready to pay that? Pell Grant might take some off if you qualify for the maximum award amount, but she’ll still need to take out loans, most likely the max amount in loans each semester.
(What I mean is, tuition and fees are going to be about $5,000 each semester, and living costs for a freshman will be about $5,000 there as well since a dorm will cost about $2,500, and the meal plan is about $3000+. Books and supplies are about another $2,000 if the dorms and meal plans don’t break you)
If you missed the priority deadline, then you’re out of luck for the Honors-Only scholarships.
If you apply for the Honors College, then you can get into Honors classes which usually have a cap of 20 students, which means if she has to take freshman English or something, she’ll have the option to take it in a very small class as opposed to taking it in a lecture hall with 300 other students.
Does she need individual attention? Does she ask LOTS of questions? If so, then definitely apply for the Honors College.
The application is done through Raider Connect, and something the application doesn’t tell you is that you need two professors or teachers to write you a recommendation which she’ll type their names and emails. They’ll get a form to write a recommendation online, but you are not able or allowed to see what they write, so pick your teachers wisely for the recommendations–ones you KNOW will write something good.
Not all classes are offered with the Honors option. Some are, mostly classes that you can expect to have large classes in like gen eds.
