Texas Tech Honors College

What are my daughters chances of getting into the Honors college. She is ranked 15% at her high school. Very competitive school in the suburbs of Houston. Her GPA weighted is 4.55 and her unweighted is 3.75. Her Sat is a 1280 She missed the priority deadline by a few days and now we are still waiting to here. She is accepted into engineering at Purdue but of course with the out of state costs. We are trying to make a decision, Thanks

I would recommend that you call someone at Texas Tech directly. They won’t give you odds, but they probably will confirm (a) whether they generally offer some slack with the deadline and (b) what they typical stats for accepted students are. U of H also has a good honors college and is extending the deadline for applicants until March 1 for those who attend their upcoming open house this Tuesday evening (2/10). There is also a scholarship competition for attendees. Check their website for details if you are interested. Purdue was a good match for my S but we decided not to apply there specifically because of their poor reputation for OOS aid. UT-Dallas is a STEM-oriented school that also might be worth consideration.

I second the advice to have your daughter (not you) call a representative at Tech’s Honors College directly (go to the TTU website) and discuss her situation specifically. My son graduated from the Honors College in 2008 and had a personalized, academically solid education there. Both their faculty and administrative personnel deeply believe in the mission of Tech’s Honors College and are ready to assist students any way they can. Sounds like hyperbole, but it’s not. I was so impressed with my son’s Tech Honors College experience that I donate to the Honors College every year and I recruit as a parent volunteer at Plano High School College nights for Tech (though I am an alum of the University of Chicago). Just a couple examples of personalized experiences and caring…several times my son went to lunch with the Dean of the Honors College at their favorite Thai restaurant in Lubbock. An Honors College administrator heard my son was going to a Tech job fair and personally recommended him to a Houston based Fortune 250 oil field services company representative. My son works for that firm today. The Honors College at Tech is really that exceptional.
