Hi, I was recently accepted to OU. In my letter, the Dean encouraged me to apply to the honors college, so I did. I was wondering if there was any way to check the status of my honors college application?
Thanks,
KG5APR
Hi @KG5APR! Our D is an OU freshman in the honors college. I don’t recall there being a way to check the status of the application.
I do not remember there being a way to check that either. If you are a NMF and you complete the information, my understanding is that you will be accepted. Wishing you the best!
I got in!
Congrats @KG5APR!!! That is great!
Congrats! Definitely one of my favorite things about OU.
I’ve read that NMFs are generally admitted to the Honors College. Can anyone confirm this? My son is NMSF, likely NMF, and has very high test scores, but his class rank and unweighted GPA are a bit outside the requirements of 3.75 or top 10%, so I’m wondering whether he would be admitted to the Honors College. If not, I really don’t think he would attend OU.
I’d be surprised if he didn’t get into the honor’s college. He still has to apply but I’ve heard that NMF don’t even have to write the essay - they just write I’m a National Merit Finalist in the essay field.
thanks @3scoutsmom I hope that’s right. It seems like a good program and is one of the reasons he’s considering OU.
@TexasMom2017 I believe your son should still make it, especially if NMF. However, if he’s outside those requirements he should probably put extra care into those essays even if NMF.
@WoolScarves thanks - good point
We just visited OU with our D. I got the impression all NMF would be admitted to the honors college if they submit the application. It was important to the honors college that no students were forced into their program, so the requirement to apply. I sort of remember that no essay would be required for NMF also. Since it’s important, email them directly at honors@ou.edu and bring up your concern.
@jerzmaster You are correct that NMF will get into the Honors College without writing an essay. That is what I did when I applied. I was just responding to the fact that the student in question is still only NMSF (I’m sure they’ll end up NMF) and therefore might want to take the other factors into consideration. All said, it is not too difficult to get in.
S1 did not complete the essay. He will graduate with Honors in May.
Maybe this is a new thing … my son asked the National Scholars office and was told that he does need to write the essay for the honors college application … although he was also told that he will definitely be admitted aince he is NMF.
@TexasMom2017 I can’t remember exactly where I heard that my D did not have to write an essay. It was during the campus tour and may have come from a student. We considered submitting the application (I think it was online?) without filling in the essay field. She submitted an essay anyway since she had already written one for another application that needed just a few modifications for OU honors. I think the honors college got back to her very soon after everything was submitted and admitted her.
Your S can try to submit the application without an essay like some of the other posters. If they don’t respond back to you within a week or two, call them about his application status.
@jerzmaster thanks - but I think DS should just write the essay since he was asked to do so. He has written so many this year, I don’t think one more will kill him.
@TexasMom2017 Our D is an OU NMF freshman in the Honors College. She wrote the essay as part of her application. She reasoned that since on the application it asks if you are “NMF” when you respond “yes” it would say no essay is needed if it truly wasn’t required. She didn’t think it was too much to ask of them to write an essay for consideration.
I actually went on my OU tour yesterday (after submitting my honors college application with an essay) and the National merit office said you didn’t have to do the essay if you’re national merit, they actually told me they hoped I didn’t spend too much time on it. I was told the same thing from the people in the engineering department who we talked to
@cdnotready thanks - no idea why my son was told something different!
