I was wondering about the Honors College at American, how you get in? Do you apply or are you selected for it?

You are offered admission to the honors program based on your application to the university; there is no separate application process for freshmen.

If you don’t get into honors as a freshman and you do well when you are there, you can apply for the honors program later.

any current students- what is the honors program like at au? better dorms?

does this also mean a better chance at scholarships?

There is an honors floor in two dorms, no difference that I can tell (I’m not a student, my son is an freshman honors student and I’ve been in the rooms.)

Merit scholarships are offered in differing amounts to honors students. The more they want you, the more money they will offer. The highest single amount is free tuition, but those students who they really, really want can get a different merit scholarship to cover at least some housing costs. One of my son’s friends got more than one, that’s how I know. He’s paying very little to attend (and he is a very impressive kid).

I am not sure if there are some merit scholarships offered to non-honors students.

The honors program starts off with a book that everyone is supposed to read. This is the topic of discussion groups and I think you need to write a paper. You also need to go a certain number of honors functions (which sound like fun, they take trips and do barbecues and stuff) You are eligible to take special honors sections of basic courses (such as Econ) and also special honors colloquim courses. These special courses sounded neat, they are only offered once and are based on special interests that the professors have. At the honors open house, they offered a one hour “sampler” of three of the courses - my son and I went to one the financial crisis. In order to graduate with “honors” you have to take a miniumum number of honors courses.

Merit scholarships in varying amounts are offered to non-honors students. You can find more info on the website, I believe under financial aid.
