Honor's College

Has your D visited all of the schools she's considering? It might be a good idea to help her come up with the decision that works best for her. My son really prefers USoCal over AzSU & we haven't been able to convince him to seriously consider AzSU, tho I have heard of folks who have been very happy there. My friend's son is at UCSB, where he's very happy. Another friend's son may end up at BHC because it is the school that is most affordable for NMFs & none of the other schools which accepted him have awarded enough FAid to make attending realistic. Overnights at each of the schools may help your child get a better picture of each school. Are there kids from her HS that attend each of these schools? Perhaps she can contact them for "the inside scoop."

My D (out of state) graduated from the BHC at ASU last May,and had a very successful and happy experience.Trace my postings by using my name for postings or PM me,as discussing it all over again will bore most of the boards participants!

Definitely go visit if you can, before making decision. I know time is going fast, but I just put H and D on a plane this morning to go to Tempe on the way to a business mtg H has nearby. We called the honors college office and they have set up a personalized tour for the two of them for Monday. We know someone from the high school here who is finishing his second year on the NMF free ride and loves the school. I talked to his mom about it (D is also NMF). A girl from D's class here has already accepted the NMF offer and is definitely going, so I guess they could be roomates if D decides to go. My friend's son does not have a car, but his mom says public transportation is great, other kids have cars and he gets rides. They save a lot of money with the out of state student discount on their car insurance.

We have taken D to see almost all of her choices, although some were immediate write-offs for various reasons. When you are weighing the diff. factors and cost is a big one for your family (it is for us), you really need to know how you feel about a school before deciding to go into debt for it. We got pretty much no money at all from our big name schools and now are looking more seriously at the next bunch. In some cases the feeling we got from a campus or town helped in deciding the debt question. The boy we know at ASU is happy as a clam and so is his family. It worked for them.

I am a HS junior, and I was nominated as a National Hispanic Scholar. I have a few questions that someone here might be able to answer...

How is Barrett for pre-medicine?
Is there a lot of competition amongst the students?
Are pre-med classes taken with other honors students, or are they large ASU classes?
What kinds of opportunites (research, volunteering, clinical experience, etc) are available?
What is the medical school placement rate?

Thanks for any answers/links and any other insight or info you can provide!

Parents, educators and students - it is that time again! College applications and college decisions...

My daughter hasn't started her classes yet, so it could turn out fine, but I still am irritated with the U of A honors college. She's a National Merit Finalist, read all about the small classes, intellectual challenges provided by honors courses, etc. in the honors college literature when she made her decision to stay in state -- and her first semester schedule is totally generic -- no honors classes were available or offered to her. I feel like the U of A has done a bait and switch.

Asu honors college has more money, so it does offer some classes that are only for honors students. But alot of there classes they will take whats called a footnote 18 which is a contract with the professor to do extra work and get honors credit for that class. A footnote 19 will be only honors students and then anythng with the Hon prefex is only honors. These are the small classes at ASU. Hopefully your daughter will still love UofA we are in state too and know alot of kids that went there and like it alot.

Hi UofA mom,
I am a little confused. Are you writing in the Arizona State U. Honors College thread regarding your experience at University of Arizona Honors College?
I think 'asumom' is responding to you and explaing the Arizona State Honors College classes. I know she didn't talk about the Honors classes taught by the Honors college.

<a href="http://www.asu.edu/aad/catalogs/2006-2007/general/pdf/2006-2007-UG-145-149.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://www.asu.edu/aad/catalogs/2006-2007/general/pdf/2006-2007-UG-145-149.pdf</a></p>

Pages 148 and 149 have the list of classes offered by the Honors College.

ASU's Honors College requires the two semester sequence of "Human Event" which is small and Honor's only. After that, students can take classes that are Honors only, regular with the Honors footnote (as noted above) or regular sections.Sizes of classes will be mixed, with Honors sections having a smaller cap size.D did mostly the Honors footnote option, as she was a music major and thats what fit her needs.Class sizes for her ranged from hundreds (general science req) to one on one (Senior Honors thesis).
Im not familiar with U of A's Honors program.Perhaps your D should contact an Honors(not regular) advisor and see about setting her schedule properly.I would think at least her first English class should be Honors only,if nothing else.

At U of A's honors college, you have place into english honors, not all honors students place into english 109H. The reason her D did not get honors classes is that did not apply early so they missed the honors orientation. There are honors classes and breakouts of some of the larger classes in most subjects. From what I have gathered, ASU charges 1K to enter the honors college. U of A doesn't have the money to offer as many classes because they don't have the surcharge.

As far as I know, the proposed additional fee for the ASU Honors College was defeated upon voting, but perhaps someone has updated info for the 2006-07 year. Extra $$ they have comes from the stewardship of the 10 million Barrett endowment (Craig Barrett is CEO of INtel, his wife is an alumna of ASU).

The Honors fee did get approved for this year. I'm not sure what it is for the new class but for continuing students it is $125.00 per semester so a total of $250.00 for the year I think the new freshmen are paying $250.00 per semester.

I just got accepted to the BHC...so excited!

Any insight would be cool! Yea, this thread is old...but im hoping...
