Honors Colleges (UIC specifically, general info is great, too)

So as I'm looking at my safety schools, I'm noticing a lot of them offer honors colleges. For me, this is mostly UIC and their honors program. On their website, they detail a couple key points of why it's advantageous, what you need to do, etc. but it really seems very... well, it's not very clear, at least for me.
Can anyone offer some info about honors colleges, both in general and for UIC if you have it?

It usually gives you unique research and study abroad opportunities. It also looks good on the resume because the students in the Honors College are on average smarter (higher SAT, GPA, etc.) than the general student body. So if you are the type who takes education and career seriously, choose Honors College over the general program given the choice.

My kids are in an Honors College at their school (not UIC).

For many honors colleges, the following applies…

1) classes are smaller (at my kids’ college, honors classes are limited to 15 students)

2) classes are taught by the best profs (it’s usually a perk to be able to teach these small classes of the best and brightest kids)

3) priority registration of classes - register for classes before everyone else.

4) honors housing.

5) The classes are often LAC-like and can include current events and other important global topics. Classes tend to be seminar style and discussion-based rather than lecture style.

^ mom2 has it. The problem is that these perqs vary by school. At UCLA for example, priority registration was abolished for the Honors students about a year ago… now just Ath-a-letes and (I think) Presidential scholars.

You need to investigate for each school whether the four significant perqs – priority regstration, first access to research projects, best profs in small discussion classes, and Honors housing, are offered.

UIC does not give priority registration.
You can get some special scholarships and research opportunities.
There are a handful of honors sections.
There is honors housing.
Honors College in BH does have its own computer lab.
