Thanks
Any info on the FLEXUS program? Is that a living learning program? Is it a good choice for my DD? How would she choose FLEXUS? Would she still be in the Honors College?
Are all students who were accepted as college park scholars accepted into one of the programs as long as they submit their choices by the deadline? DD submitted her choices already, but I wasn’t sure if they offer scholars to more students then they can fit in anticipation that some will go to a different school. She’s very excited to be a part of the program, but it sounds like they limit it to 70-90 per program, with 12 programs.
@lifegarding - In Honors, students must select a first and second choice, because some Honors Programs have limited space. I would expect that Scholars operates the same way. Maybe @maryversity provide some input on this.
Yup, Scholars worked the same way…here’s my response on another thread with a similar question:
I remember that there were a few programs that were “competitive” to get in because of the high demand and limited space. One was the business program and one was STS (science, technology and society) and I forget what the other one was but may have been SDU (Science Discovery and the Universe?)…I seem to remember one did a mock rocket launch (or something really cool) that made it really popular, haha
@Astro77 I don’t know much about FLEXUS, but I do know that it’s a living and learning program and that someone I know is both in her Honors LLP and can still partake in FLEXUS, even though she does not live with her FLEXUS program peers. I would call the FLEXUS program coordinators for some more information (http://www.wie.umd.edu/undergrad/flexus). Sorry I can’t be of much help on this one!
@lifegarding arding where did you see the Scholars program choice on the Coalition App? We couldn’t find it. Thanks.
I can tell you that I have two older kids that applied for the Class of 2018 and 2019 respectively. The first was a CS major and was not admitted for Honors or Scholars but offered a $9K/year merit scholarship while the second was admitted to the Honors College but was offered a smaller merit scholarship. Clearly in our experience, merit scholarships appear to be unrelated to admissions to any LLP.
Do you know the difference between gemstone and humanities?
@klbmom18 Gemstone is a program that allows its students to work in teams on a research project over the course of 4 years. Honors Humanities is a program that allows students to study the Humanities and then work on a Keystone project that they then present. Here are the links to both of their curriculum pages: http://www.gemstone.umd.edu/academics/curriculum.html , http://www.honorshumanities.umd.edu/curriculum.html
What I gave was a very VERY general look at both of the programs. Browse more on each of their websites for a comprehensive understanding of their programs.
@Twillsmomnp it was in the checklist section from what I recall… Not the decision buttons. The checklist has a part near the bottom where they can designate their top choices. DD picked three non-science ones, so sound like these are less popular and might work out for her :).
Hi! I put ILS as my first decision, do you know what the odds are of being accepted? i know 1000 students are in honors, about how many of those get into ILS?
@lifegarding, thanks, I found it and DS signed up. STS is first choice here. We also sent in the deposit. I wonder if that will influence whether you get your first choice? Maybe we should start a Scholars thread?
@Twillsmomnp my D Has signed up for a Facebook admitted student group, and the kids offer mention if they are in scholars to try to get a head start on getting to know each other before the semester starts. My D’S did this for his university and found his roommate as well as several friends who he’s kept in touch with for 2 years now. Yours may want to look into it, too. A scholars thread sound like a good idea to me… I’d join!
@futureterp22 I don’t know how many people get accepted, but I know that around 60-70 people join the program.
I was recently accepted into the Honors college, and was wondering if I am still eligible to join the integrated life sciences program. I am a prospective Public Health major, and I read that ILS requires to input your AP Bio score when filling the preference form. However, I am in AP Bio this year, and will not know my score until July. Will this restrict me from being eligible to join ILS? Thanks
@aag2000 - Call or email the Honors College with your question Phone: 301.405.6771 Email: honors@umd.edu
@whenyoubelieve, any thoughts on Honors LLCs? My S18 is looking at Design/Cultures + Creativity, but is wondering if might be too STEM-y? He’s a communications major, very interested in politics, visual design (like interior design), popular culture, art, media, but not an engineering guy at all. He thinks the dorms for DCC look good. His other choices would be Humanities or Entrepreneurship and Innovation.
@pickledginger I think that your son should choose whichever LLP appeals to him the most! In my personal experience, I’ve seen that DCC has a wide array of majors (DCC lives in the same building as ACES, the program I’m in) and doesn’t really seem as STEM-y as people might think! Even in programs like ACES, which would give off a STEM-y vibe (since the program is centered around cybersecurity), has people of majors outside of STEM. What really matters is that your son is truly interested in the program he preferences on his form! (Plus, from what I know about my friends in DCC, your son has very similar interests with those in the program.)
Thanks, @whenyoubelieve!
