Iowama - You are so kind to go out of your way to say that! It is nice to hear, of course, but even nicer to know I have been of some help.

Tulane is so unique in many ways. When it is a fit, it really does fall into the category “I cannot imagine being anywhere else”. I just enjoy seeing people find that same experience when possible, and seeing the school thrive. Plus there is a lot of really interesting history associated with Tulane and New Orleans, with a lot more of it being written post-Katrina. Curious students should love that stuff.

Apologies that I did not see I was asked to comment on off campus housing. My DS (a junior) lives in a house with 2 other guys a few blocks from campus. I think they wanted to move off campus, but that said, I don’t think they felt their chance of getting on-campus housing was very high. Plus, they were tired of eating in Bruff.

The cost of housing around campus is not cheap. The rent alone (well, it includes water too) is $1600/mo and you will have to sign a year lease (they dont take 9 mo leases). I think my ds really enjoys living off campus, and it teaches them responsibility and cooperation, IMO. Now, if they would only learn to clean up a bit more…

DS said it was a bit stressful to find the housing because of the increased demand this year, but it all worked out and he doesnt know of anyone who didnt find what they were looking for withing a few blocks of campus. He walks about 5 minutes to get to campus, and its been fine. He has a bike, but it needs new tires and he hasn’t bothered with that.

Do the dorms come with mini fridges or microwaves in the rooms? I’m vegetarian and cafeteria food choices can get pretty old pretty fast. After living for weeks on white bread American cheese sandwiches from the cafeteria at one summer college program, I’m thinking it would be nice if I could just walk to a nearby grocery store when I get sick of cafeteria food, or go on a limited meal plan and just get my own breakfast and lunch. Is there a Trader Joes or Whole Foods or some place like that close to campus?

Also, from what I understand Bruff has decent veggie options, and will work with you for more options. I imagine there are further options among the various food vendors in the LBC. Tulane runs shuttles to grocery stores like Whole Foods, I believe, although if you have a bike it is easily gotten to that way also. It is a fairly long walk, especially if you have refrigerated items. You can also take the streetcar down to the cross street on St. Charles and walk just a few blocks.
