What is the issue with the honors dorms? And if you are in honors and must stay in one, what is the best choice Lincoln, Bradley or Taylor, particularly for a first year male engineering student?
Thank you!
The issue is they are not brand new since so many new dorms have opened recently. I think a lot of students don’t realize there are actually worse dorms on campus that freshman not in honors might end up in, especially since they try to put sophomores in the newer buildings.
Bradley is south campus, so a walk to engineering classes. My D loves south campus because she gets to walk across the oval everyday.
Lincoln is one of the two taller buildings near the stadium and next to the river and a major running/bike trail (Olentangy Trail https://www.columbus.gov/recreationandparks/trails/Olentangy-Trail/) There are marked kayak routes now on the river and it connects to several city parks. Very interesting suite layouts because of the shape of building. It’s also near the RPAC and nice playing fields.
Taylor is on north campus where engineering buildings are and closer to High Street. The north campus area also has new dining halls and new dorm buildings so very busy area. “North district” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BoIDUzZiw54
Thank you so much for the information. This is very helpful. I thought the engineering buildings were north campus, but the first year, there may be classes from other classes, such as math, physics, etc., but it looks like those buildings are north as well. That you for the video link too!
It’s not that they “try” to put sophomores in newer buildings; rather, the sophomores select them. The only rooms off limits to sophomores going through reselection are those reserved for scholars groups and special circumstances. So “new north” dorms, super doubles, and suites go fast. There are also dorms not available to freshmen. So yes, you can definitely do “worse” than Bradley, Lincoln, and Taylor. And not necessarily guaranteed to do “better”.
Keep in mind, though, that all of the dorms are suitable for daily living. None are condemned. Some may be nicer than others aesthetically, but all dorms have their pros and cons.
Just to clarify- you list your “preferences” and a possible roomate (both approve) but there is no other way to pick an honors dorm? Thanks!
For Honors dorms, preference an area of campus (North, South, West). If you request a roommate, the request has to be mutual for it to be approved.
It is unclear if the roommate has to also be in Honors (for Scholars they do), so a call to Housing may answer that for you.
No way specify a particular dorm - just get your contract in ASAP with your area of campus preference listed/ranked and cross your fingers!
Best of luck!
I would suspect that only Honors students can live in honors housing. Otherwise, there’s no point to have three dorms (or at least parts of dorms - not sure if all of Lincoln is honors) allocated to them.
None of the buildings are designated as solely honors dorms. Same with scholars. Just a block of rooms.
The fact that Honors is new to the community living requirement (save for those in a LC) would maybe warrant clarification since it’s not on the website. It would make sense that it’s the same as Scholars, but I don’t think they’ve definitively said so.
Thank you everyone for the advice!
