Honors Humanities

My son was admitted to Honors / Honors Humanities. Can anyone help with some insider information on that program? Do students generally like it?

I've seen plenty of people were offered gemstone and scholars today, I have not seen any Honors humanities.

Is the Wicomico dorm a good place to be?

honors humanities is like gemstone where only a select people from honors get accepted. its actually a good thing kinda like gemstone but less research oriented and more open to other activities. only 100 people are in it a time so its very selective. for more info go here http://www.honorshumanities.umd.edu/Program.htm

Did your son list a humanities major? Because I didn't, and I got into it. I don't quite know why.

Yeah. On my niches statement I literally said "I hate group research" and I still got into Gemstone.

plundertime, were any of your high school activities in the arts or humanities? school newspaper, drama club, band, choir, special awards for paper writing, extra english classes, etc? i think they try to get a variety of majors involved in the program but tied together with the common interest in the humanities.

a778999- same here. i turned it down of course (and am glad i did based on what many of my friends in the program say). i think what i wrote was "this type of research does not interest me", and was incredibly surprised that they bothered to invite me anyway.

^What do your friends say about Gemstone? I was really considering doing it.

Honors Humanities is apparently less stress. Kids generally like it, and it only lasts two years. The website gives a lot of useful info. I like the location of the honors dorms a lot, but I heard Wicomico was kinda run-down because it is one of the older dorms at MD. I would still prefer that over something further from the lawn.

Thanks for the input. My son is a math major, but is in the band / orchestra and does have a lot of writing activities on his application, so it makes sense.

He's pleased to be accepted into the Honors program and will have to do some research to see if Honors Humanities is something he should pursue.

To Imbl: my daughter was invited into Honors Humanities also; sounds like a good thing to me, especially since the site says they try to give the kids a liberal arts college feel within a big university setting. She is also in the orchestra.

groovinhard-- it's called the Mall, not the lawn :) as far as gemstone, a lot of people end up dropping out. it can be really rewarding if you're willing to work at it. i decided not to do gemstone and have never regretted that decision--i've had the time to get involved in other things that really interest me and other special programs that are more tailored to my major (QUEST, specifically). don't let me talk you out of gemstone, of course, but do know that i've heard complaints about housing/workload/lack of social skills by some program participants. again, this is completely anecdotal and second-hand information. :)

lol, sorry...child of a UVA alum...haha. Thanks for the info about Gemstone.

ahh, UVA...i knew that sounded familiar :)

Ahhh, I am in the band, orchestra, and Liberal Club. I also take Spanish Language and Literature...I guess it makes sense. I can still major in whatever I want to right?

Re: Honors. SCholars, Gemstone. Did you all hear about your aceptances by e-mail or regular mail? Thanks

It didn't say the honors program stuff in the acceptance email, but when you get the snail mail it will say it, and if you check your admissions status online it will mention any honors/gemstone/scholars.

I got into Honors and Gemstone.

Admissions email said nothing.
Online admitted check says honors and gemstone.
Snail mail said honors.

did everyone get an admission email? so far im waiting on my snail mail letter, but i have only gotten admission notification at the website, no email. is that bad?

D did not receive any email from admissions---got info from website. We're in NC, so snail mail won't arrive until later in the week (especially w/ President's Day).
