I recently received my UD acceptance letter but received no notification of honors program (so I am assuming I did not get in). I’m not sure why I did not get in. I got a 2270 in SAT, 5s in AP Chem, Calc AB, Calc BC, and Comp Sci. I even got two 800s in SAT Chem and SAT Math II and 750 in SAT Physics. Any help as to why I did not get in would be appreciated.
I am quite disappointed but is it possible to get into the honors program after the first semester at UD. Would I be eligible for the general honors award if I do so? On the website, it stated that you can be a part of the honors program after freshman year but, but I would not like to wait that long.
Additionally, I calculated that my total APs to date will equal to about 23 credits. The website also indicates eligibility by having atleast 11 credits done. If I do decide to go to UD could I present these credits before the summer and try to be a part of the honors program?
Thanks for any help!
Your test scores sound great, and based on those it sounds like you should have gotten into Honors. Did you have a good GPA and solid extracurriculars? Do you feel that your essay was strong?
I had my essay peer reviewed by several of my classmates who got into the honors program. I think it was a good essay. My GPA is about 4.43 and I am in the top 10% of my class. I go to a very challenging school so it is tough to even be in the top 10%. Also, I had several leadership positions at my school and I was very involved in extracurriculars. Could it just be that I applied so late that they ran out of honors seats? I definitely applied before the deadline.
@DesiHero Wow, your numbers are outstanding, and I am very surprised that you didn’t get in to Honors. Did you apply before December 1st or after? Did you do an interview? I believe that they say the interview is “highly recommended” for Honors applicants.
I applied after December 1st and I did not do the interview. Is it still possible for me to apply after my first semester at UD and still get the honors award. I’m going into chemical engineering so I would like an honors degree.
It is my understanding that if you don’t enter the Honors Program as a freshman the earliest you could subsequently formally enter into it would be at the beginning of your sophomore year (you would apply during the end of your second semester). However once you complete your first semester with a college GPA of 3.0 or above (credit for AP courses prior to entering UD would not qualify) you can actually take Honors Courses during your second semester (if space is available in the Honors sections of the courses you are taking) and you get permission from the Honors Program to take the courses (usually not a problem). This way you can begin to accumulate Honor course credits even if you are not formally in the Honors Program to begin with. I believe that you would need a two semester GPA of 3.4 or above to be eligible for acceptance into the Honors Program (Please check on the GPA numbers I listed above on UD’s Honors Program web-site as they may be different now from what I remember). Good luck.
I’m going to ask a question that might seem silly. Did you fill out the UD Honors Program application? UD is different than many other schools that acceptance into the Honors Program requires a separate application, not just great test scores and grades. My son is a good example - he was automatically accepted into several Honors Programs at other universities but didn’t apply to UD’s program. Not surprisingly, his UD acceptance letter did not include an invitation to participate in the Honors Program.
And as far as running out of spots, I don’t believe that is the case. My daughter and I visited the Honors Program office during her accepted student visit and I inquired as to how many students were offered a spot in the program. The number was staggering - at least double the number of beds in the Honors dorm that year. The head of the program explained that historical numbers give them a good idea of how many students will ultimately matriculate into the program.
If you were accepted into the ChemE program, I am very surprised that you were not also accepted into Honors unless there was a snafu with your application. I would call and inquire - my impression is that they want to have top-notch students in their program.
I did apply separately to the honors program. I wrote the separate essay and made sure to apply to the honors program. I do think that they might have messed up on my application.
My guess is that you didn’t show well-roundedness in classes other than STEM courses? UD Honors probably wants to see a large mix of classes so they know you can excel in courses like honors history/english, stuff like that. I was also accepted to ChemE at UD, but since my english/writing scores were as good as my science/math scores, I think I was “well rounded” so I was accepted to their honors college. I’ve heard from many people that you can apply into UD Honors even now, after you’ve applied to their regular school. My advice is emailing the head of the UD Honors college.
Sorry I did not reply back. But my counselor contacted the UD people and they said that it did not show up on their end that I applied for Honors. But then the representative looked into my application and saw the essay. I was quickly reevaluated and I was able to get into the honors program.
Good! It didn’t make sense that you applied and didn’t get accepted. Good luck with your studies! ChemE is a fine major that will give you a breadth of opportunities after graduation.
