Honors program at UAH

Does anyone have much experience with the honors program at UAH? It seems like some university’s programs are great while others seem to detract from the degree focus.

Hi bamamom94, my son is just completing his junior year at UAH. He originally started in the honors program, but chose to drop out because there were not enough classes available for him to take. He came into UAH with 56 AP/DE credits. Perhaps there are more options available now, but he was not going to give up previously earned hours.

Thank you! Is the honors program pretty much just the class size and honors dorm?

My son came in with 2 full years of college through dual enrollment. Yes it was more difficult to find honors courses, but certainly not impossible for him. The hard part was going to be to fulfill the 300+ level honors credits, but he learned that JUMP credits will count for that. So that will actually be very easy and he’ll probably graduate with more than the required 24+ required honors credits. By signing up for JUMP you don’t have to continue on to your master’s, but it does open up 500+ classes to you as an undergrad.

The honors college has opened up many more sections and course selections since my son has been there. I believe he started a year after momreads son. Anyone starting UAH now, even with 2 years college already completed, should be able to fulfill the requirements.

Son prefers the honors classes because of the smaller size. Plus it gives you more options in your schedule. Instead of X sections of English Lit, you now have X + 3 to work with. The dorms were definitely nice. There are also other perks that the honors college has recently implemented. These are not guaranteed to everyone and you have to apply for them, but they now offer summer stipends to help cover expenses for internships, study abroad money, and money for summer research. Those are just what I can think of that have been added recently. Dr. Wilkerson seems to be very active in growing and constantly improving the honors college.

Oh, another benefit is that the smaller class sizes, especially your first year, helps forms new friendships. Most of my son’s best friends are from freshman year suite-mates are honors class-mates.

ThreeKids Mom, I am glad to read that the Honors program has evolved over the past three years. My son was a bit frustrated that someone with the program said he should give up his AP/DE credit to retake classes. That was not going to happen, because he truly felt that the lady he had for those classes was outstanding. Does my son regret not being in honors? No, because his two majors keep him very busy.
