Honors Program/UMCP Questions

Oops! Too late to edit! I was in the LEP mindset and mistakenly referred to that instead of LLC. Disregard my prior post.

@cpmd2013,
Hi,
Both the Honors College and CP Scholars have LLCs that are internal and only available to those in the programs, but there are others that are standalone programs like Writers’ House or Language House. Check out the link below.

@cohen2000. Her weighted as of now is about 4.25

@Mitchkreyben, my guess is that if the ACT comes up to 31 as you previously mentioned, your daughter would have a decent shot at honors in the social sciences. This is assuming that she has taken a very rigorous course load. My daughter was admitted to honors with a 33, but I think it was her course load as much as anything. Good luck to her!

I think that if she can bring up her ACT score a little bit, then she has a good chance of getting in to honors

My son was accepted, but not to the honors program. I have been told my more than one person that the honors dorms have more programming and that it is much harder to come in as a non - honors student. Would you please comment on this? Thanks.

@MCwald, I’m not sure what you mean by it is much harder to come in as a non-honors student…?!

You meet people in your dorm by keeping your door open or walking down the hall and going to meet other kids with their doors open. Everyone is in the same boat of wanting to make friends, meet new people.

If you want organized programming, you join a club. Honors/Scholars and other living-learning programs don’t have the market cornered on programming. There are plenty of students NOT in a special program, so your son would not be isolated unless he chooses to be and makes no effort whatsoever.

Early on in the fall there is a day where all the clubs at the school set up booths all around McKeldin Mall and you go around and see what interests you. You can sign up to participate in as many clubs as you want.

There is a website that you can check for free events with programs of all sorts [Free Stuff at Maryland, The University of Maryland](http://www.freestuff.umd.edu/events.cfm). You can even download an app onto your phone called UMD mobile so you have info at your fingertips for just about everything going on at campus on a daily basis.

There is a large Greek presence on campus, so you can go through “rush” either in the fall or the spring. Fraternities have lots of programming.

The religious groups on campus (Catholic Student Center, Hillel (Jewish) and many others!) also have lots of programming that are both social and community service oriented if that’s of interest to your son.

That’s what makes Maryland such a great school - the possibilities and opportunities abound for just about everything. With 800 clubs, you would be hard pressed to not find something of interest!

@plumazul

Are there stanalone programs for the science majors. Or the LLC programs are only restricted to Honors and and Scholars

Does anyone know about the honors dorms? The actual dorms, not the people. Like are they close to important amenities on campus, do they have AC, etc?

@carbs2: I was on campus for an overnight visit this past Thursday/Friday, and my host’s dorm was LaPlata, which houses the EIP and ILS honors students. Gemstone is in Ellicott Hall, and University Honors is in Hagerstown Hall. All three of these dorms are in the Ellicott community. LaPlata is air conditioned, has a laundry room, and has a newly renovated basement with a lounge area and cooking area. The Ellicott community has dining hall in the middle of it, and the Eppley Recreation center is basically next door. I think LaPlata is the only dorm in the Ellicott community with AC.

The other honors programs are elsewhere on campus and I don’t know much about them.

Thanks for the info! I’m in University Honors, so I’ll look into Hagerstown.

How’d you like your visit overall? Help you decide for/against md?

Did anyone else get into ACES? Just curious, since I haven’t seen anyone else on the forum talk about the program.
As a potential Electical/Computer Engineer, it seems really cool.

Yes my son got into Aces. Very excited.

I thought the overnight visit was excellent. My host was in the EIP program, so I got a feel for what it will be like for me next year. After I came back home, I put down my deposit for UMCP.

Awesome! That’s encouraging!!
