Is doing the honors program worth it?

About me:

Want to graduate in 3 years (Might have to do summer session or change math major to minor)

Want to double major (Math/Applied Science & BizEcon)

Extremely confident in ability to get Summa Cum Laude at graduation. (I know it’s hard, but I know many that have done it without sacrificing any sleep)

I get priority units regardless of honors program.

So if I can get Summa Cum Laude, wouldn’t that defeat the purpose of doing college honors?

no. summa does not defeat the purpose of college honors.

there are three tiers of honors at ucla. departmental, latin, and college. the school considers college honors to be the most prestigious. this is because departmental honors recognizes research experience (which the school definitely values), and latin only reflects your grades, but college honors recognizes a commitment to learning for its own sake by taking more specified, "scholarly" courses. each honor is in place for a different purpose.

the work is generally not much more difficult than in any other class, but the focus is usually very specific and the class sizes are small. honors professors are generally pretty notable. i enjoyed it but if you don't actually want to do it, don't just do it for the prestige. actually, don't do anything for prestige. it isn't worth it.

just figure out a curriculum that works for you. i really wouldn't recommend graduating in 3 years, double majoring, and going for summa + college honors. it'd make for a fairly un-fun and, honestly, narrow college experience. your time might be better spent in a club/group/activity/whatever. but if you can fit the classes in (and there's a fairly serious unit commitment for 4-year admits), and are really interested in pursuing that kind of course of study, of course it's worth it.

i am currently in the honors program.
is it bad that i will not be taking any honors courses 1st quarter? will i be really behind in my required units?

the only reason i see for doing college honors is to get priority. otherwise, its not really that important in terms of grad/prof schools
