I've heard mixed reviews (more negative then positive) on CC, so I'd like to know more about it before I take the time to apply.

Can someone explain to me how the honors program works? What I've gotten so far is that I have to take extra honors classes beyond my GE and major requirements, and all it does is signify that I took "honors" classes in my transcript/diploma.

If I don't apply, do I still qualify for the honors program for my major? Is that honors program worth doing?
I'm talking about the honors program described at the bottom of this: UCLA General Catalog 2012-13: Integrative Biology and Physiology Undergraduate Study

Also, are the honors societies (i.e. Golden Key or ALD & PES) worth joining?

Sorry for asking so much, and thank you to anyone who takes the time to read and answer!

You take “Honors Content” courses, which may or may not mean extra classes. Some of your major classes might come in “honors” versions, which will allow you to fulfill the requirement of obtaining X many honors content units to be in the program. On the transcript it says you were in the College Honors Program. I have taken Honors Content courses coincidentally without any care about the program itself, and my transcript indicates that they were honors content.

The honors program in your major is probably something you apply to do when you’re senior standing, to submit a thesis and graduate with honors–completely independent of being in the College Honors Program.

Honors societies are worth joining if you intend to be active and participate as a member. Otherwise, its just another seventy-five bucks given to some organization and some title added to your resume. You can join and do nothing and that’s it. That probably would not be worth it. But if you attend meetings and make friends in those organizations, then it might be worth it.

@phospholipase: Thanks for the detailed answer! I was thinking of joining an honors society to get to know people plus the opportunities. Any suggestions on which one is good? I know there’s Golden Key and ALD & PES

I don’t keep up with the honors societies, although I’m a member of ALDPES and keep getting invitations to join Golden Key. There is also the Mortar Board, which you can apply for after you’ve completed at least 90 units (junior-standing).
