Honors Program

Anyone have first hand experience with the University Honors Program? I am interested in hearing pros and cons.

Heya, I’m going to be part of the Honours programme when I attend LMU next semester, so I can’t tell you anything, but I can tell you that the student reps of the Honours programme are really friendly and will answer your questions if you send them an email. I can post some of the things they told me though…

“I have found my Honors classes to be far more interesting than the generic core. Each professor is given the freedom to interpret the Honors class titles according to their interests, and no one class is ever the same as the previous year. For example, last semester I took “On the Nature of Things.” My class was about evolution and issues of race, sexuality and genetics. Another section of the class focused on origins of the universe and compared biblical studies to archaeological finds.”

“For one, Honors looks great on a resume and helps you exponentially
with both adjusting to life on campus (providing a close-knit circle
of friends which you CAN easily escape from; especially in the film
school) and receiving scholarships if that is an issue for you.”

“To be honest, I prefer Honors curriculum. I won’t say it’s easier (but it is) but that’s irrelevant to the fact that they treat you like adults. That’s worth so much more than I could possibly explain. No more reading quizzes and trivial assessments. Classes are structured as small, lecture and primarily discussion-oriented seminars about abstract topics and philosophies. You’ll read alot and write alot but you’ll learn even more and you’ll do it at a pace that isn’t strenuous but at the same time, keeps you thinking and moving actively.”

"Being an Honors student also allows you to take more than a full course load of classes with no extra charge. For me, I was able to overload a few semesters so that I could get ahead in terms of credit hours going into my Junior and Senior year. You also get priority registration, which means you schedule before any of the other people in your grade and so making your class schedule work the way you want and getting the classes you need is really very easy. "

Hope that’s helpful!

It’s extremely helpful-thank you very much! We heard from a current student that the Honors Core destroyed his GPA since the program prides itself on being a harder curriculum and only gives out a certain number of A’s. Supposedly if you do not excel in writing you do not have a chance at success in this program. Trying to figure out if this is fact or just a rumor originating from a disgruntled student.

I don’t think it’s supposed to be a “harder” curriculum. I think it’s just that the subjects covered are more interdisciplinary and interpretative, and very much based in critical thinking. That’s probably why writing is so important for communicating your ideas. But obviously it’s not for everyone so it’s good to hear everyone’s side of the story! :D
