I just received an invitation into the Honors Program at URI. I'd like to hear from students and graduates who have been through this program. What was it like? What did you learn during the Honors program? Was it worth it? Did it improve your overall URI experience and help you after graduation?

I’m a current junior at URI in the honors program. Honors maximizes your education and you meet a ton of cool people. You need to take at least 15 (I think its 18 with the newer entering classes) credits, one of which must be the honors colloquium. Here every Tuesday night you attend a guest lecture and class time is spent learning about that years subject. In 2012 it was healthcare. This coming fall it’s education. Another required class is a capstone type project

Some of the honors classes I’ve taken include:

Honors physics, taught by the legendary Dr. Kahn

Honors organic chem (where we made (legal) drugs!). Honors organic chem was co-taught with the chemistry that chem majors take, so essentially it was a few extra seats in the chem major directed orgo that were opened up for pre-med students and listed under an honors class

A class taught by the German consulate-general in Boston/former ambassador to N. Korea. Guy has a ton of interesting diplomacy tales.

A 100-level econ course about the economic crisis

The honors lounge is also a really chill place to well chill. Especially for me being a commuter (although not so much this year as I’m doing research in the lab a lot). I’ve met a ton of friends through the honors program and you see a lot of them sitting on the comfy couches.

So if you choose to go to URI, I highly highly recommend it. The prestigious scholarships and pre-med advising are also ran through honors. I’m pre med and my friends that are pre med and graduated have gone to BU and Mt. Sinai, among others.
