For those who are in the Honors Residence, I found this little gem while searching for my daughter in case you want to see where your room is located. The room assignments and roommates are getting posted in my.sc.edu - housing

@coleman4 This is great! My S was trying to figure out if he is in a single or double. I will have him look at this map but most of the rooms look like singles to me. How can you tell the difference?

If he looks on his my.sc.edu > housing > columbia (where he completed the housing application), they are posting the room assignments and roommate / suite mates. It was a bit confusing- I needed my son to explain it b/c my daughter is in a double but the suite mate is in a single room.

So for example, if your room assignment reads like this: “B300 / B302 B302” then your room is B302. If it reads like “B300 / B302 B300” then your room is B300. Then look at the same for the assigned room mates and if one of theirs matches yours, then that is your actual room mate. If they both match each other and you don’t have a match, then you have a single room. Plus, you can probably tell a bit by the room sizes in the pdf file. Hope that makes sense!

It’s funny, I’ve always heard the rooms in the honors dorm were larger for the most part but it turns out my daughter’s room is actually smaller than my son’s was in Columbia Hall last year. Not by much but still… her room in Honors shows 198 sq ft and his in Columbia showed as 204 sq ft. Hers looks to be one of the smaller rooms and her suite mate who has a single is also one of the smaller single rooms. She’s just happy to have a roommate. She didn’t want a single room and couldn’t find a roommate on her own so she did random (hopefully will work out).

@coleman4 so if there is only one roomate listed do they both have singles?

My D lived in honors and I always thought it was curious how random in size the rooms seemed to be given it was a brand new build She had larger room since it was handicapped (must not have needed it for that purpose) so the shower for the suite was huge since it was wheelchair accessible. Most rooms close to or above 200 square feet are probably doubles. The nice thing about honors is, even if you get smaller room, there are so many other gathering areas - couch common areas, study rooms…there are even guests hall bathrooms (toilets) so that you don’t have to go all the way back to your room if you are hanging out in study room or common area.

It may not show this anymore, but with D it gave contact email or way to send message to roommate and suitemates, so D could see a way to contact 3 other people. That would tell you how many people are there.

@VinMic2 - does the “roommate” have a different room number than your son? If so, then yes, it would seem they have a suite with 2 single rooms.

@scmom12 - yes, they listed 2 other girls - one who seems to be the roommate of my daughter and the other who seems to be their suite mate in a single room. My daughter emailed them last night but last I asked her, she hasn’t heard back from them yet. They may not even check their USC email or that Housing area on my.sc.edu yet so who knows when she’ll hear back. My son never did hear back from his suite mates when he did that last year until move-in day! Hopefully she’ll hear before then so they can plan who’s bringing what. My daughter is quite equipped with everything (fridge, microwave, TV, printer) b/c she’s using some of my son’s stuff from last year since he’s moving to an apartment.

My DD was in honors last year. Her room was on the “seam” of the building with a large metal strip running through the middle. We bought a $20 IKEA rug, but it ended up being too flimsy to pad the surface. So FWIW the Tuesday Morning on Forest Drive in the Forest Acres section of Columbia usually has a nice selection of nicer rugs. It’s close to trendy Trenholm Plaza so worth the drive from the USC bubble. Café Catura is a fabulous, yet not expensive restaurant.

Café Caturra closed, but on the plus side we are getting a J. crew and Anthropologie in that shopping center. Another good place for solid color rugs is Ollie’s Cheap stuff out Garners Ferry Road (past Target and I-77)

I am pretty sure my S got a single room 121 ft and only one roomate listed. He wanted a double and a roomate but I think having your own space can be good too. Just to clarify move in day is one day August 16? Also if my S does not have a roomate then he is responsible for bringing his own fridge/microwave etc?

@VinMic2 Yes, that sounds like a single- would be very tight for a double. I think there’s benefits to both (single or double). My D is a bit of an introvert so I’m glad she has a roommate (and she wanted one too)… It might help bring her out of her shell. But having your own space is also nice.

Yes, move-in day is Aug 16 (1 day)… they’ll have a staggered schedule based on floor #. As far as the fridge / microwave, etc. yes if he wants them in his room. If they want to share, they’d have to have access to each others rooms to get to them- or alternatively, keep them in the adjoining bathroom. Also, some might point out they have community kitchens on each floor (I think) but it’s nice to have convenient access right in your room too. My son found he didn’t use his fridge much but used the microwave all the time.

My d was in honors last year. They do not have a kitchen on every floor - just FYI. The singles seemed to work out last year for those who wanted them. Such an exciting time. My D was on the 6th floor which is the top floor (they call it the Penthouse). It is smaller because it is only one wing - at first she wasn’t sure about it but she loved it. They also have very high ceilings on the 6th floor that makes the room feel much larger.

@ahsmuoh - That’s good to hear since my D’s room is on the 6th floor as well, but seems to be one of the smaller rooms so I’m glad to hear about the higher ceilings. What do you mean by “smaller because it is only one wing”? It looks like it’s the middle (the main) building, correct? The other 2 ‘sides’ only have 5 floors from what I can tell but how does this make the 6th floor smaller? Based on the diagram, hers is 198 sq. ft but the other doubles are larger (200+ sq. ft).

FYI even though official move-in day is Saturday, in the past few years you could move in on Friday - nice if you’re coming from out of town and spending Friday night - you can drop off some stuff so it’s not in car and then organize on Saturday. They have done it different each year. When D was moving in as freshman, you had to fill out form and get approved, one year you had to post on housing page, one year it was just “move in”. So who knows how they’ll do it (or if) this year but look for information as summer progresses.

Only downside on Friday is not all the stuff set up around campus for parents, computer help, etc, but we didn’t need it and, as freshman, D had to move in early because of family wedding. Other years she has moved in on Friday just to get stuff there and get key (and clean campus apartment) before mad Saturday dash.

scmom12 - Sorry to hear of Café Caturra’s closing. :-(

When I look at the honors dorm map there are several rooms on the corners that are much larger, like 250 sq feet. Are those RA rooms? Why are the room sizes so different? The map shows rooms that look to be the same, but the square ft varies. Where do some rooms gain the extra space?

Coleman - when I say smaller I just mean less rooms. The other floors have three wings and you can get to all three wings. The kids on the 6 th floor loved being I. The “penthouse” this year. I think as far as the square footage of each room, my d said the only ones you could really tell the difference were the handicap ones because th bathrooms are so much bigger. She had 4 guy friends in a suite that was handicapped and she said the bathroom was wasted on guys! Seriously the massive amount of “extra spaces” makes it very comfortable. My d had a lounge right next to her room and she called it her “living room”

The honors dorm floors are coed… ie each floor has boys and girls mixed? It sound like it does not matter if you have a single because the lounges encourage socializing. My S is an extrovert so he should have no problem meeting people.

Yes, dorm is coed by suites - so floors mixed.
