I am a rising senior and am trying to get my schedule straightened out. I have taken 3 years of Spanish and have gotten A's each year. I would really like to branch out and take an interesting class like IB philosophy instead of taking Honors Spanish 4, without compromising my chances of getting into a good school. Here is a list of classes I am taking my senior year.

AP English 12
AP Statistics
AP Physics w/ lab
IB Philosophy* (Possibly Honors Spanish 4)
Honors US History

Schools I am applying to:
UVA, Vanderbilt, UNC, V-Tech, UGA, Wake Forest

What do you guys thinks looks better to colleges? The higher credit from Philosophy or the fourth year of Spanish?

I don’t necessarily know which will look better to colleges, but since both are higher level non-required classes it shouldn’t make too much of a difference.

That being said I took IB Philosophy last year and it is one of my favorite classes that I have ever taken. It definitely improved my critical thinking and writing skills and opened whole new doors of thought for me. Know that you will probably have to do a lot of reading. Also the quaility of a course like this will probably depend a lot on the teacher. So if you know/like/have heard good things about him/her then I would definitely go with philosophy.

I would say if possible take a spanish placement course at a local CC, get into the highest level spanish you can while being versed in the language. Then take IB Philosophy. I don’t know about what Michael2010 said, but it’s definetly a great class.

I personally went into IB Philosophy not knowing what to expect. I needed a 6th IB subject class, and even though I needed a fine art credit, I chose Philosophy. At the time I chose it mostly because I heard the teacher was great, and it was an easy class with little HW. It turned out to be an amazing class, it augmented me for IB History/English, and I think it will help me for TOK senior year. It’s very interesting, and a great way to fill the day!
